What is the legacy of Honeywell's Engines & Power Systems business?

A. Honeywell has been in the gas turbine engine business for seven decades. We invented the auxiliary power unit (APU) and have produced over 100,000 APUs. On the propulsion side, our first engine, the TPE331, has been in service since the late 1960s and is still in production with the infusion of new technologies, to serve agriculture, commuter transport, and military aircraft. We have a similar strong role in business aviation where we developed the TFE731 turbofan, which has been in production since 1972 with continuous technology updates and refreshes ever since.

Why are military operators so loyal to Honeywell's Engines & Power Systems products?

A. Military customers look for performance, low cost, reliability and dispatchability. Decade after decade, our APUs and propulsion engines continue to meet and exceed those requirements. We add further value in the aftermarket with our proven repair and overhaul services that get assets back on platform or back on the shelf for when they are needed. In fact, our APU Performance Based Logistics (PBL) program was recently recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense as the PBL of the year.

What is the future of the T55 Chinook helicopter engine?

A. We've recently announced that we're finalizing a new and improved T55 engine to power the U.S. Army's Chinook helicopters. This upgraded T55 is expected to increase power by more than 20% at sea level, nearly 10% power increase at high and hot altitudes and reduce fuel burn by almost 10%. We can deliver a further upgrade of the T55 engine with ratings up to 7,500 shp with growth margin to go still higher. This current round of optimization and risk-reduction testing is a continuation of Honeywell's internally funded upgrade program for the T55, which has powered Chinook helicopters around the globe for more than five decades. We believe the new T55 also represents the lowest risk to integrate onto the Chinook, as it already fits in the existing nacelle and maintains all the same connections to the aircraft, and will be a great contender to power the Army's Future Long Range Assault Aircraft.

What distinguishes Honeywell Engines and Power Systems in the commercial space?

A. Honeywell has been the unquestioned leader in the auxiliary power unit (APU) market for nearly 70 years. Our APU products range from as small as the compact RE100 APU for smaller business jets, up to the 331-500 APU for the Boeing 777. Plus, Honeywell's HTF7000 engine series is the super mid-size business jet engine of choice, powering aircraft from Bombardier, Gulfstream, Embraer and Cessna. We're also continuing to invest in component technologies to further enhance our commercial gas turbine products.

What's next for Honeywell's Engines & Power Systems portfolio?

A. Honeywell is continuing to advance APU technology in several ways and works to provide best-in-class operational efficiency to customers. For example, Honeywell Forge for Airlines, an advanced analytics-based software platform for airlines, helps operators reduce delays and cancellations due to unscheduled APU maintenance. Our 131-9 model is the APU of choice for the single-aisle air transport market, and a Honeywell APU is on every Boeing 777 (and 777X), as well as every Airbus A350. On the propulsion side, our TPE331 turboprop powers every General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper and, as noted earlier, our HTF7000 turbofan is the super mid-size business jet engine of choice. Our goal is to continue making our products ever more robust to keep them on wing longer, and to offer compelling aftermarket maintenance solutions to our customers. We are also positioning ourselves to be competitive in the emerging hybrid electric market. Our combination of electric power generation and gas turbine expertise makes Honeywell uniquely qualified to be a key player in this space.
