KC-390 Millennium: Redefining Tactical Airlift For Heavy Vehicles Mobility
As modern armed forces place increasing emphasis on rapid deployment and operational mobility, the ability to transport armored vehicles quickly and efficiently has become a critical airlift requirement. The KC-390 Millennium, the most modern tactical airlifter currently in service around the world, was designed to meet these demands through a combination of higher payload capacity, advanced cargo handling technologies, and a cargo compartment optimized for large and heavy military equipment.
The aircraft offers a payload capacity of 26 metric tons that exceeds the traditional tactical arilift class, enabling operators to transport a wider range of military assets while maintaining excellent operational flexibility. Vehicles such as the M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) and the Pandur II armored vehicle can be transported with minimal preparation, reducing deployment timelines and accelerating force projection.
A key advantage of the KC-390 is its Advanced Cargo Handling and Aerial Delivery System (CHADS), which supports the loading, unloading, securing, and delivery of vehicles, pallets, and airdrop platforms. The aircraft's cargo compartment was specifically designed to accommodate modern military vehicles. Not only do the cargo roller conveyors flip over into the floor, but the cargo restraint side rails can also be retracted, resulting in a totally flat loading surface. With an unobstructed internal width of 3.45 meters / 11 ft 4 in and height of 3.2 meters / 10 ft 6 in, the KC-390 minimizes or eliminates the need to remove vehicle components before loading. Use of 25,000 pound chains increases the safety factor for the restraint of heavy combat vehicles during transport. The cargo floor incorporates more than 40 tie-down points rated at 25,000 pounds each, providing easier access and more options for the loadmaster attaching chains to the load. The robust tie-down grid on the cargo floor and ramp additionally includes 138 points rated at 10,000 pound each. Therefore, having several of these already integrated on the cargo compartment floor significantly reduces the time taken for the onload enhancing the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) capability.
Loading operations are further facilitated by the KC-390's long rear cargo ramp and hydraulically actuated integrated struts, which level, support and stabilize the aircraft during heavy vehicle loading and unloading procedures. These features reduce reliance on ground support equipment and simplify operations at austere airfields.
Unlike many legacy airlifters, the wider floor dimensions of the KC-390 enables easy access to the rear of the aircraft when transporting large vehicles. Loadmasters can easily walk down the sides of the vehicles allowing safe, unobstructed movement throughout the cabin to conduct cargo inspections.
