France has announced its order for a next-generation nuclear cruise missile with MBDA, targeting service entry in 2035.
French Defense Procurement Agency DGA awarded the development contract for the ASN4G on June 2 as part of its wider efforts to modernize the country’s nuclear weapons capabilities, the government said. The ASN4G missile will replace the upgraded ASMPA missile currently in service.
The missile is due for use from the Dassault Aviation Rafale F5 fighter. Development work is underway on that latest standard for the twin-engine fighter.
“The performance capabilities of the ASN4G—particularly its hypersonic speed—will ensure the continued credibility of the airborne nuclear deterrent in the face of evolving threats,” the government said June 11.
Paris last year disclosed that the missile would feature a new warhead, the TNA4G.
