From The Archives: USAF/Fairchild T-46A In Flight Test
The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s Nov. 25, 1985, issue, featured the ill-fated U.S. Air Force Fairchild T-46A trainer flying with vanes added to its left wingtip and vertical stabilizer for the purpose of flutter evaluations.
The aircraft had completed its initial series of airworthiness flights Nov. 8 of that year, after 13 flights that totaled about 20 hr.
The aircraft's first flight occurred Oct. 15, 1985, at Edwards AFB, California. Dubbed the “Eaglet,” the light jet trainer was cancelled in 1986 with only three aircraft having been produced.
