From The Archives: Sukhoi's S-37 - Testing New Russian Fighter Technology

s-37

The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s May 29, 2000, issue featured the Sukhoi S-37 (not to be confused with the Su-37) forward swept wing fighter prototype in flight near the Zhukovsky Flight Test Center outside of Moscow.

The S-37 was the most advanced Russian fighter to be developed in more than 20 years, representing Russia’s answer to the fifth-generation F-22, and remained highly classified by the Ministry of Defense. At the time it had completed about 100 flights and was progressing through its supersonic test regime.

The company wanted to bring the large twin-engine fighter to the Farnborough air show that July, Sukhoi General Director Mikhail A. Pogosyan told Aviation Week’s Craig Covault at the time, but this was not to be.

Serial production never moved forward, but the sole aircraft produced did serve as a technology demonstrator for a number of advanced technologies later used in the Su-35 and Su-57.
