From The Archives: Pilot Report USAF B-2

On March 22, 1995, Aviation Week & Space Technology Managing Editor David M. North became the 61st person to fly the U.S. Air Force/Northrop Grumman B-2, and the first since the bomber’s initial flight on July 17, 1989, who was not a Northrop or U.S. Air Force pilot, or a Defense Dept. official.

North and Rocky Mountain Bureau Chief William Scott, who accompanied North to Whiteman AFB, Mo., wrote a package of articles on the still relatively new bomber, providing a comprehensive look at the 509th Bomb Wing's accomplishments in operations, maintenance and training as it flew six of the 21 B-2s that would ultimately be produced.

The cover of the magazine’s April 17 issue featured a B-2 as seen from an Arizona Air National Guard KC-135E tanker.
