From The Archives: Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
Thirty-five years ago, the cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s Sept. 3, 1990, issue featured a fold-out image of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, commemorating the key World War II battle fought 50 years earlier.
Flying over Lincolnshire, south of RAF Coningsby, in the foreground is a Spitfire carrying UO-T markings.
In the center is a Hurricane with GN-A markings, which was believed to be the last Hurricane to enter service in early 1944.
The Lancaster bomber in the background, which carried the code letters PM-M (squared), was one of two surviving flying examples of the aircraft type. Built in 1945, it never saw operational service.
Of a total of 7,377 Lancasters built, 3,349 were lost on operations. Royal Air Force photograph by Sgt. Rick Brewell.
