From The Archives: 60 Years Ago In Aviation Week

A Westland Wessex 5 (the lower helicopter) refuels a Wessex 1 in flight during a demonstration at the 24th Farnborough flying display. The Wessex 5 fed a refueling hose, streamed by a small parachute for stability, to the other helicopter, which was fitted with grappling gear. After the grapple secured the hose, the latter was retracted into the Wessex 1 to an onboard refueling point. The technique, which was under development by Westland Aircraft Ltd., and Flight Refueling Ltd., was proposed for use by the British military.
