From The Archives: 45 Years Ago In Aviation Week

In 1979 the People’s Republic of China released a series of photographs of its weapons—mostly copies of Soviet equipment—continuing a policy of showing off some of its air, ground and sea capabilities. 

This coastal defense cruise missile was a Chinese adaptation of the Soviet SS-N-2 naval surface-to-surface Styx missile. It featured a single solid-propellant booster with a minimum range of 5 mi. and a maximum range of about 25 mi. 

China also used the weapon on fast patrol boats. Aviation Week’s Oct. 15, 1979, issue featured a photo story of more Chinese weapons on p. 20.
