From The Archives: 30 Years Ago In Aviation Week - Pratt Engine Meets Phase 1 IHPTET Goals
The cover of Aviation Week’s Nov. 14, 1994, issue shows Pratt & Whitney’s XTE-65/2 Joint Technology Demonstrator Engine running with a thrust-vectoring, thrust-reversing spherical convergent flap nozzle.
It was the first full powerplant to meet the aggressive phase one goals laid down by the Defense Department’s Integrated High-Performance Turbine Engine Technology Initiative (IHPTET), which was aimed at developing a powerplant with a thrust-to-weight ratio 30% better than the advanced technology engines of the time. Stanley Kandebo’s cover story begins on p. 38 of the issue.
