From The Archives: 10 Years Ago In Aviation Week - F-35 Earns Its Sea Legs

Ten years before the fleet’s first acknowledged use in combat against Houthi weapons facilities in Yemen, a Lockheed Martin F-35C from U.S. Navy Air Test and Evaluation Squadron VX-23 appeared on the cover of Aviation Week’s Nov. 17, 2014, issue, banking during its approach to the USS Nimitz off San Diego. The photo was taken from an F/A-18 chase aircraft. 

The event kicked off a two-week at-sea development test in which a pair of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) carrier variants performed their first arrested landings and catapult takeoffs.
