Ever more lethal technologies are finding their way into the modern battlefield. Recent examples include armed drones; hand held missile systems with sophisticated guidance systems; smart artillery munitions; and sophisticated mines and IEDs. Even sniper rifles have seen a noteworthy performance increase with improved sighting systems and munitions. Whether engaged in direct combat or in a support role, the vulnerability of troops within the range of these weapons is a reality that is difficult to alter.

Countermeasures systems and adjustments to tactical doctrine are tangible responses but cannot completely mitigate the dangers. In response, the innovative systems and sensors subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), ELTA Systems Ltd. (ELTA), has leveraged its proven legacy in combat systems design and advanced sensor technology to produce a series of unique Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) with proprietary, in-house artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. These systems perform a wide range of combat support functions, dramatically reducing the exposure to danger of human combatants. The versatile, field proven REX Mk2 (REX), the most compact RAS in ELTA's product lineup, is purpose designed for missions at the squad level.

Included among the winners of the RPV tender in the UK and a participant in the British Army Theseus Project, where it demonstrated advanced robotic logistic capabilities in the dangerous “Last Mile Resupply” support role, REX has an established reputation in the world of unmanned autonomous systems.

IAIREX is an unmanned hybrid electric all-wheel drive vehicle with optional amphibious capabilities. Featuring a highly developed suspension system, REX can traverse difficult topography, coping with mud, sand, deep snow, boulders, and shrubs; and negotiate complex urban areas. The vehicle operates silently to 70 km and up to 400 km using an onboard generator. With a load capacity of up to 1.2 tons, this compact, easily concealed platform features a unique multi mission configuration that enables payloads to be quickly and easily mounted on the REX without the need for time consuming pallet changes - a tremendous advantage in deployment under stressful combat conditions. The design also enables sensors and weapons systems to be accommodated concurrently, adding to mission flexibility and performance. Finally, the vehicle's modest dimensions enable a single V-22 Osprey VTOL aircraft to accommodate two REXs with accompanying sensors, weapons, ammunition and supplies.

As a world leading sensor house, ELTA equips REX with an incredible array of sophisticated systems. Target acquisition radar, day/night electro-optics (EO), and a hostile fire detectorr are integrated into a system that efficiently performs Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions.  REX detects and classifies hostile personnel, vehicles and weapons fire. Potential targets are cued to the EO for additional validation, and then slewed to the vehicle's advanced Remote Weapons Station (RWS) for immediate response. The RWS can be armed with a wide array of fire support weapons, including a 30 mm cannon or light, medium, and heavy machine guns. Additional options include an ISR drone, IED detection system, and an electronic intelligence gathering (SIGINT) payload.

Designed with safety as a primary consideration, REX is equipped with a unique system that protects soldiers and other vehicles operating in close proximity. Empowered by advanced terrain navigation and obstacle avoidance technologies together with ELTA's proprietary Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning software, REX performs complex tasks with complete autonomy. REX can also be operator controlled, either remotely or line of sight, via secure communications. Finally, a ‘follow me’ mode allows a lead vehicle or even a soldier on foot to guide an automated convoy through difficult, dangerous terrain.

With its automotive performance, sophisticated robotic/autonomous capabilities, and extraordinary multi-mission weapons and sensors payloads, REX offers combat troops the ability to perform  complex tasks without exposing personnel to unnecessary dangers. Whether bringing food, water and ammunition, performing dangerous field reconnaissance, providing precision fire support, or many other critical missions, REX is ready to serve as a highly valued and trusted member of your combat team.
