The French Ministry of Defense has launched an accident investigation after two Dassault Rafale fighters collided in midair, causing both aircraft to crash.

The two French Air and Space Force fighters were returning from a refueling training mission in Germany when the accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time on Aug. 14, the service said.  The government said the pilot of one of the Rafales ejected safely, with the search still underway for the crew of the twin-seater.

Both aircraft were assigned to a squadron housed at the Saint-Dizier 113 air base, whose mission is to train pilots and navigators. The base is located roughly 50 mi. from the crash site.
