From The Archives: Five Apollo 11 Moon Landing Covers From Summer, 1969

Coverage of the Apollo 11 Moon landing dominated Aviation Week during the summer of 1969, running on five consecutive covers from Jul. 28 to Aug. 25.

The first cover, a grainy image of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin planting a U.S. flag on the Moon was actually a photograph of a British television screen, taken by Aviation Week's art director Lawrence J. Herb.

The next cover featured a clearer black-and-white photo of Armstrong and Aldrin's footprints next to the flag.

The third cover showed a color photo of Aldrin climbing down from the lunar module taken by Armstrong. Next was a photo taken by astronaut Michael Collins from the lunar orbital command and service module of the lunar module making its approach for docking.

The fifth cover photo taken by Armstrong of Aldrin on the Moon.
