From The Archives: 25 Years Ago In Aviation Week

A U.S. Army Theater High Altitude Area Defense missile destroyed this Aerotherm reentry vehicle launched by a Coleman Research Hera rocket on Aug. 2, 1999. The image was captured via telemetry from the infrared seeker on the Thaad interceptor just prior to impact. It was the first time Thaad intercepted a target outside the atmosphere.
