BOMBARDIER selected Collins Commercial Avionics Pro Line 4 avionics for its proposed CRJ-X. The contract also calls for Collins to act as systems integrator for the avionics on board the 70-passenger regional aircraft under study. Collins, which already provides its Pro Line 4 avionics for the Canadair Regional Jet, also supplies the systems for the Learjet 60 and Canadair Challenger 604 business aircraft.
NATIONAL AIRCRAFT RESALE ASSOCIATION said three new companies have joined the five-year old association, bringing membership to 27. New members are UNC Airwork, The Wyble Group and Flying magazine.
A series of changes to Part 25 of the Federal Aviation Regulations regarding certification standards for transport category aircraft will harmonize U.S. requirements with those of the European Joint Aviation Requirements. The Part 25 changes, which were proposed in April 1994, were published in the June 9 Federal Register and take effect July 10. The modified rules include changes in climb and landing standards; longitudinal control; minimum control speed; stall demonstration procedures; stall characteristics; and high-speed characteristics.
CESSNA AIRCRAFT selected AlliedSignal Aerospace Equipment Systems to provide power transfer units for the new Citation X business jet. The contract is valued at $1.4 million. Power transfer units combine a pump and motor to transfer power from one hydraulic system to another aboard an aircraft. The PTU for the Citation X "is unique," according to James Griffith, vice president and general manager of the AlliedSignal division. "It incorporates a floating port plate, a proprietary device that gives aircraft operators significant performance advantages."
SOUTHERN JET MANAGEMENT, INC., Greenville, S.C., is requesting bids for construction of new maintenance and storage hangars, plus a number of T- hangars. The fixed-base operation, located at Greenville's Downtown Airport, has nine hangars, but Richard (Dick) Kimm said strong business growth at the airport makes it necessary to build more hangars. Kimm, who spent much of his career in the FBO business as a Page Avjet marketing executive, took over as general manager of Southern Jet in January.
FLIGHT DYNAMICS shipped the first heads-up guidance system (HGS) to Dassault Aviation in Bordeaux, France for installation on a Falcon 2000 production aircraft. The initial unit will be used for flight testing and certification and future HGS units will be installed at the company final assembly facility in Little Rock, Ark. Dassault previously announced that HGS would be available as an option on the Falcon 2000, permitting the airplane to land when the Runway Visual Range is as low as 700 feet.
AVIATION WEEK GROUP of The McGraw-Hill Companies is launching the Aviation Week Group Information Center on the CompuServe Information Service with "live" coverage June 11-14 from the Paris Air Show. Services will include a weekly briefing abstracted from AWG publications, archival and reference data bases.
DAN ELWOOD was promoted to chief pilot for Miller Aviation. Elwood joined Miller in 1993 as a line captain and previously served as a pilot for Flight Services in Norwich, N.Y. Elwood is a captain on Learjet 36 and 55 and Citation 550 aircraft.
The Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee will hold a June 21 meeting in St. Louis to solicit information and opinion from the aviation community on maintenance, preventive maintenance, rebuilding and alteration and inspection of small aircraft. The meeting, set for 7 p.m. at the Adams Mark Hotel, is a follow-on to an earlier session held during the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association symposium in Cincinnati last month (BA, May 8/197).
ISRAEL AIRCRAFT INDUSTRIES new Galaxy business jet will have to meet special conditions associated with "an unusually high operating altitude (45,000 feet) for which the applicable airworthiness regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards," FAA said last week.
THE FIRST GROUP OF PILOTS from Gujarat Airways, a new regional carrier in India, completed training this month at FlightSafety International facilities at LaGuardia Airport in New York and Wichita, Kan. The Gujarat pilots finished their type ratings at FSI's Beech training center in Wichita following simulator training in New York on the Beech 1900D. The carrier, based at Baroda, the capital of Gujarat State, has acquired a fleet of 1900Ds to serve a 12-city route system that includes flights to Bombay.
PRATT&WHITNEY named Robert E. Rosati senior vice president-international, reporting to P&W President Karl J. Krapek. Rosati will be responsible for the company's programs in Russia, activities within the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe, representing the interests of Pratt's Large Commercial Engines Group, Government Engines and Space Propulsion, Pratt&Whitney Canada and Operations. In addition, Rosati will continue to serve as the engine manufacturer's primary liaison with airframe manufacturer Airbus Industrie.
RICK HODGES, a public affairs specialist for the Air Line Pilots Association, joined the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's legislative staff in Washington, D.C. as director of legislative communications. Before joining ALPA, Hodges was a correspondent for several aviation publications.
Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center, Leesburg, Va., avoided a system failure that could have delayed aircraft throughout much of the East Coast last week by shutting down a computer system and switching to the only backup before it failed. The problem was in equipment the center uses to link new state-of-the-art computers with planned view displays (PVDs) that are "1960s vintage stuff," said National Air Traffic Controllers Association representative Chris Sutherland.

AMETEK AND HONEYWELL formed an alliance to integrate Ametek's Sentinel data acquisition unit (DAU) with Honeywell's Primus 2000 XP integrated avionics system for the Bombardier Global Express business jet. The Sentinel DAU will acquire critical information from a variety of aircraft systems and transmit it to Honeywell's integrated avionics computers. The DAU will monitor inputs from the electronic engine controller, electrical system, air data computer, hydraulic system and a variety of other aircraft subsystems.
UND Aerospace at the University of North Dakota is changing its management structure following a safety audit by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF), and will name a safety director who will report directly to the dean of the aviation college, UND officials said. FSF reviewed management and organizational structure, flight instruction, air service operations, safety programs and maintenance during the 10-day audit.
STEVE D'URSO was promoted to director of flight operations for Miller Aviation. D'Urso began with Miller Aviation in 1980 as a line pilot and became chief pilot in 1985. He is a designated pilot examiner for Cessna Citation CE-500 and CE-650 series aircraft.
PIPER Model PA-46-350P airplanes (Docket No. 95-CE-29-AD) - proposes to require installation to the right of the manifold pressure gauge in full view of the pilot of a placard that specifies manifold pressure limits and incorporation of those limits into the pilots' operating handbook. FAA determined that certain manifold pressure limitations should be incorporated following a review of the aircraft's powerplant data.
Nicholas Garaufis, a New York attorney, was appointed chief counsel for the Federal Aviation Administration. Since 1986, Garaufis has been counsel for Claire Shulman, president of the Borough of Queens in New York City, serving as a legal adviser, director of intergovernmental relations and aviation adviser. He has been a member since 1992 of the New York Area Aircraft Noise Mitigation Committee, which advises FAA and Congress on measures to alleviate aircraft noise pollution in the New York area.
TYROLEAN AIRWAYS recently took delivery of the first of three Fokker 70s it ordered from the Dutch manufacturer. The second aircraft will be delivered in July with the third following in August. All three aircraft will feature 80-seat, single-class interiors.
Noting that Raytheon Aircraft is at a "turning point," company officials say the Wichita-based manufacturer is undergoing a transformation that rivals all other changes in the company's history, "including the massive build-up of manufacturing capability experienced by Beech Aircraft during World War II."
DynCorp, Reston, Va., won a four-year contract valued at $82 million to provide aircraft maintenance, logistics and modification services for U.S. Army, Reserve and National Guard units. DynCorp said its facility in Killeen, Texas, which employs 470 workers, will support approximately 450 aircraft based at Fort Hood, Texas, and provide other required support to an estimated 1,200 aircraft in a 10-state area bounded by New Mexico, Colorado and Alabama. DynCorp said the new contract is one of the first regionally based U.S.
LOWRANCE AVIONICS, a division of Lowrance Electronics, Inc., appointed Moeller Advertising Group of Tulsa, Okla. to handle publicity and advertising related to the launch of the company's Global Positioning System avionics products. Moeller will assist in all aspects of account management including advertising, creative development, media placement and public relations services for Lowrance, a division of Lowrance Electronics, Inc. of Tulsa. The company manufactures GPS navigation receivers, plotters and mapping products for aviation and other markets.
WALTER MILLS was named technical service representative for TXI Aviation. Mills, formerly chief inspector at TXI, is an A&P mechanic with FAA inspection authorization. In his new position, Mills will represent the company's landing gear and component overhaul programs.
