Aviation Sales Co., Miami, Fla., acquired the assets of the aircraft distribution division of Dixie Bearings, Inc. The unit being acquired is a leading provider of new aircraft bearings, power transmission components, accessories and related products to airlines, cargo carriers and overhaul service facilities worldwide. Dixie Bearings is a subsidiary of Bearings, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio.

TEAERO CORP. merged with its sister company, Ontic Engineering and Manufacturing, Inc., effective Aug. 1. Officials said the move will "simplify order and delivery of the company's aircraft products for customers." JETSTREAM Model 4101 airplanes (Docket No. 96-NM-192-AD; Amdt. 39- 9711; AD 96-17-03) - requires an inspection to determine the serial number of the leg assemblies of the main landing gear and replacement of the defective pins with serviceable pins. This amendment is prompted by a report indicating that pins installed on certain leg assemblies of the main landing gear were heat treated incorrectly during manufacture.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation issued a request for proposals for a fixed-base operation on a 3.3-acre parcel at Groton-New London Airport in Groton, Conn. CDOT will accept proposals until Oct. 31 and has scheduled a mandatory pre-proposal meeting for 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the CT-AVRAD facility on the airport. AIRLINES WILL HIRE a record number of pilots in 1996, as many as 8,300 if current trends continue, according to airline career specialist AIR Inc. Airlines hired an average of 910 pilots a month through July, and 1,659 of the year-to-date total went to the majors. The number of pilots on furlough declined to 1,174 and American, Delta and Continental recalled all their furloughed pilots. AIR Inc. thinks it is possible that every major except USAir will be hiring by the end of 1997.

FLIGHT VISIONS will provide an FV-2000 Head-Up Display (HUD) for installation in a Gulfstream III, the second such installation in a G-III, according to the Sugar Grove, Ill., manufacturer of HUD systems for commercial and military aircraft. The G-III, operated by a New England- based telecommunications company, will have the HUD installed at Chrysler Pentastar Aviation in Waterford, Mich., this fall.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. JET CENTER plans to continue its volume-based Jet A discount program, normally offered only during the off-peak summer period, throughout the 1996-1997 winter season. Also, effective Sept. 1, the Jet Center will accept fuel and related service purchases on the UVAir credit card.

BILL SCHROEDER was named Challenger technical specialist at Duncan Aviation. In addition to his new duties as a Challenger technical specialist, Schroeder will continue to provide technical assistance for Learjet operators as a Learjet technical specialist, a position he has held at Duncan for 12 years.

Mayo Aviation, a veteran air taxi and aerial medical transportation provider in Colorado, was selected to provide medical transport services for the Flagstaff, Ariz. Medical Center. Guardian Air Transport, the hospital's subsidiary, picked Mayo to operate and manage Guardian Air's four King Air E90 turboprops and provide all pilot, maintenance and administrative services. FMC will retain control of clinical operations for the air ambulance service. Mayo, founded in 1978, operates a fleet of 16 aircraft ranging from King Airs to Learjets and Hawker 125 business jets.

DISCUSSIONS ARE CONTINUING between Israel Aircraft Industries and the Pritzker organization concerning the formation of a U.S. company to complete, market and service business aircraft, with officials hoping to conclude an agreement within the next 60 days. Brian Barents, former Learjet president, is expected to head the new U.S. firm, which will install engines and avionics in Astra and Galaxy business jets (BA, May 13/215). IAI also got some good news from the U.S. government last week, with an Air Force award for two Astra SPX aircraft. See article below

National Air Transportation Association generally supported the Federal Aviation Administration's initiative to upgrade flight data recorders in scheduled commercial aircraft, but expressed concerns about certain provisions in the proposal.

AMETEK AEROSPACE PRODUCTS received FAA approval for its Sentinel instrument system on the Agusta A109 Power helicopter. Final flight testing of the aircraft is under way in Italy and the first delivery is scheduled next month. Ametek has begun production shipments to Agusta. Sentinel instrument systems, including electronic display and data acquisition units, are standard on the A109 Power helicopter.

MORE THAN HALF the backlog of Gulfstream V business jets could entail the manufacturer accepting a trade-in. Gulfstream has orders for 63 Gulfstream Vs and said that "in connection with orders for 33 Gulfstream V aircraft, the company has offered customers trade-in options (which may or may not be exercised) pursuant to which the company will accept trade-in aircraft (primarily Gulfstream IVs and Gulfstream IV-SPs) at a guaranteed minimum trade-in price or its fair market value."

RAYTHEON AIRCRAFT SERVICES' Fulton County, Ga. facility now has two organizational designated airworthiness representatives and a designated manufacturer inspection representative on staff. The designated airworthiness representatives have the authority to certify airworthiness of aircraft for export or import. The representatives also may issue ferry permits and supplemental type certificate modification approvals. The designated manufacturer inspection representative may approve the export of aircraft parts.

AT LEAST THREE industry associations are questioning the legality of the Federal Aviation Administration's proposal to curtail or ban air tour operations at Rocky Mountain National Park. National Air Transportation Association said the proposal represents "an undue threat to the public right of transit through the navigable airspace of the U.S.

AlliedSignal Aerospace reached agreement to purchase Lori's heat transfer business from Nordam Group, a move that AlliedSignal hopes will create new opportunities in the aircraft repair and overhaul business. AlliedSignal, which did not disclose the terms of the transaction, hopes to close on the deal next month.

REFLECTONE received an order to provide an Avro RJ-100 full flight simulator to Turkish Airlines. The simulator will be certified to IQTG Level 2, the international equivalent of FAA's highest standard, and will be installed at the Turkish Airlines training center in Istanbul, Turkey by September 1997.

FOKKER Model F27 Mark 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 series airplanes (Docket No. 96-NM-142-AD) - proposes to require repetitive X-ray inspections for cracks in Stringers 4 through 7 of the lower skin of the wings and modification or repair, if necessary. The proposed AD also would require modification of the stringers of the lower skin of the wings, which would terminate the repetitive inspections. This proposal is prompted by reports of fatigue cracking found in Stringers 4 through 7 of the lower skin of the wings.
