Aircraft Technical Publishers introduced new software to help maintenance professionals comply with the recently approved Federal Air Regulation Part 43.10. The FAR requires record keeping of the current status of life-limited parts. The ATP Maintenance Director software suite can validate the part number, serial number and current life status of a part on or off an aircraft, ATP said.

U.S. Department of State is seeking aviation veterans to fill two positions in Colombia as part of the effort to control drug production and smuggling in that country. The department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs wants to hire a senior aviation adviser and an aviation safety adviser who will work with U.S. and Colombian officials in coordinating their airborne drug interdiction efforts. NEW PIPER APPEALS CIVIL PENALTY ACTION - New Piper Aircraft is appealing a proposed $222,300 civil penalty for alleged quality violations, the company said last week. The Federal Aviation Administration announced earlier it was seeking the civil penalty, charging that "the company failed to properly maintain its approved quality system and failed to ensure its aircraft conformed to the approved type design."

EMBRAER model EMB-120 series airplanes (Docket No. 2000-NM-66-AD) - revises an earlier proposed airworthiness directive, that would have superseded an existing AD that currently requires repetitive visual checks or inspections to verify that the flight idle stop system circuit breakers are closed, and functional tests to determine if the backup flight idle stop system is operative. A supplemental NPRM was issued to require modification of the secondary flight idle stop system (SFISS), which would terminate the repetitive actions.

UPS Aviation Technologies has developed a new version of its MX20 multifunction display that will show weather information from the Honeywell/Bendix King RDR 2000 digital color radar system. The new unit, the MX20-IO, also displays traffic targets from both Goodrich Skywatch and Ryan TCAD products. The MX20-IO also can display terrain awareness, VFR navigation, IFR navigation and data uplink. UPS Aviation is pricing the new unit at $14,995, including the standard MX20 with RDR 2000 weather radar, Skywatch and TCAD traffic.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduated 30 in its first class of students from the new Aviation and Space Technology Academy. The academy, which was started by the university to address the nation's shortage of aircraft maintenance technicians, offers a 16-month program leading to certification of airframe and powerplant technicians. An additional four-month certification program in avionics maintenance also is offered. The academy will produce 180 new A&P technicians annually, said Program Director Stan Mackiewicz.
Raymond Bennett was named sales vice president at NetJets. He will be responsible for sales in Georgia, North and South Carolina, as well as Chattanooga, Tenn. Bennett has previously worked as regional sales manager for Raytheon Travel Air and AlliedSignal Aerospace.
Latest Version Of STARS Deployed At First Site - The first version of full STARS recently went operational in El Paso, Texas, FAA said. Full STARS (Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System) replaces the Automated Radar Terminal Systems (ARTS) and includes new, color displays and computers that provide both radar and backup services. The El Paso version can control 435 aircraft at one time from 16 radar feeds, FAA said. STARS is being phased in.

The National Business Aviation Association and the European Business Aviation Association will open their jointly organized, second annual European Business Aviation Convention&Exhibition (EBACE) tomorrow in Geneva, Switzerland. The convention, which will be held May 28-30 at the Palexpo Convention Center, will feature information sessions with issues concerning European-based operators, operators flying to Europe and non-operators who can bene fit from business aviation.
Honeywell says its single-channel AIRSAT 1 global satellite communication system has been expanded to include a data link for information transmission. The data link is a 2.4 kilobit per second system that interfaces with either a business or home server, or it will connect to the Internet. "Business and general aviation operators with AIRSAT 1 equipment and Honeywell's OneLink transmission services for their global communication needs will now have data link capability for e-mail and direct Internet access," said Gene Ronsick, AIRSAT 1 marketing manager.
David L. Taylor, 50, an 18-year veteran of Ball Aerospace&Technologies Corp., will take over as president and chief executive officer of the Broomfield, Colo. company June 1. He will succeed Donald W. Vanlandingham, who will become chairman of the board and will serve in that position until he retires at the end of the year. Taylor most recently served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Ball Aerospace.
Fairchild Dornier and the administrator handling the manufacturer's insolvency filing in Germany are facing a June 17 deadline for presenting a plan to the courts regarding the search for buyers for Fairchild Dornier's assets. Bombardier, which is believed to be interested in the 728/928JET program, has a team in Germany assessing the regional aircraft maker's operations.
Canadian simulator manufacturer CAE lured a long-time Boeing/Flight Safety executive away to head its operations in Canada. CAE named Gary Scott, 51, group president, civil simulation and training, effective July 8. Scott had been president of FlightSafety Boeing Training International (FSBTI) and was based in Seattle. He had held a variety of management positions since joining Boeing in 1973. Scott will be based in Montreal and will oversee CAE's equipment sales and training operations servicing the commercial airline and business aviation markets.
Golf Legend and veteran pilot Arnold Palmer agreed to serve as honorary chairman of the BE A PILOT program's June Learn To Fly Month. "I'm delighted to have this opportunity to give something back to the aviation community for all the wonderful years of enjoyment I've gotten from being a pilot," said Palmer, who began taking flight lessons more than 50 years ago to overcome a fear of flying. He has logged more than 20,000 hours in the cockpit.
