The National Business Aviation Association and the European Business Aviation Association will open their jointly organized, second annual European Business Aviation Convention&Exhibition (EBACE) tomorrow in Geneva, Switzerland. The convention, which will be held May 28-30 at the Palexpo Convention Center, will feature information sessions with issues concerning European-based operators, operators flying to Europe and non-operators who can bene fit from business aviation.

Honeywell says its single-channel AIRSAT 1 global satellite communication system has been expanded to include a data link for information transmission. The data link is a 2.4 kilobit per second system that interfaces with either a business or home server, or it will connect to the Internet. "Business and general aviation operators with AIRSAT 1 equipment and Honeywell's OneLink transmission services for their global communication needs will now have data link capability for e-mail and direct Internet access," said Gene Ronsick, AIRSAT 1 marketing manager.

David L. Taylor, 50, an 18-year veteran of Ball Aerospace&Technologies Corp., will take over as president and chief executive officer of the Broomfield, Colo. company June 1. He will succeed Donald W. Vanlandingham, who will become chairman of the board and will serve in that position until he retires at the end of the year. Taylor most recently served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Ball Aerospace.

Fairchild Dornier and the administrator handling the manufacturer's insolvency filing in Germany are facing a June 17 deadline for presenting a plan to the courts regarding the search for buyers for Fairchild Dornier's assets. Bombardier, which is believed to be interested in the 728/928JET program, has a team in Germany assessing the regional aircraft maker's operations.

Canadian simulator manufacturer CAE lured a long-time Boeing/Flight Safety executive away to head its operations in Canada. CAE named Gary Scott, 51, group president, civil simulation and training, effective July 8. Scott had been president of FlightSafety Boeing Training International (FSBTI) and was based in Seattle. He had held a variety of management positions since joining Boeing in 1973. Scott will be based in Montreal and will oversee CAE's equipment sales and training operations servicing the commercial airline and business aviation markets.

Golf Legend and veteran pilot Arnold Palmer agreed to serve as honorary chairman of the BE A PILOT program's June Learn To Fly Month. "I'm delighted to have this opportunity to give something back to the aviation community for all the wonderful years of enjoyment I've gotten from being a pilot," said Palmer, who began taking flight lessons more than 50 years ago to overcome a fear of flying. He has logged more than 20,000 hours in the cockpit.

Regal Aviation added a Gulfstream IIB and two Hawker 700s to its managed-aircraft fleet, which now totals 20 aircraft. The G-II and one of the Hawkers are based at Regal's headquarters at Dallas Love Field. The second Hawker will be operated out of Regal's facility at Houston Hobby Airport.

Heather Kidd was named sales vice president at NetJets. She will be responsible for sales in southern California from Orange County to San Diego. Kidd was most recently director of sales and marketing for CLS in Los Angeles, Calif.

BELL HELICOPTER Model 204B, 205A, 205A-1, 205B, 212, 214B, and 214B-1 helicopters (Docket No. 2001-SW-42-AD) - proposes superseding an existing AD that currently requires reducing the retirement life for certain main rotor tension-torsion (TT) straps on those models and on Model UH-1 series helicopters. This document contains the same requirements but would remove the Model UH-1 series restricted category helicopters and would add the BHTI Model 205A and 205B helicopters to the applicability.

FlightSafety International won European Joint Aviation Authorities approval for its Bell 430 helicopter pilot training programs offered at its learning center in Fort Worth, Texas. FlightSafety said the approval was JAA's first helicopter training certification outside Europe. FlightSafety's training facility, located next to the Bell manufacturing plant, is equipped with full flight simulators for Bell's 222, 430, 212 and 412 helicopters. FlightSafety expects JAA certification for 212, 222 and 412 type training this summer.

BAE SYSTEMS LTD. Model BAe 146 and Avro 146-RJ series airplanes (Docket No. 2002-NM-48-AD) - proposes to require replacement of the existing "Low Temp" terminal blocks "G" with new, fireproof ceramic terminal blocks "G" in engine zones 412, 422, 432, and 442. This action is necessary to prevent failure of the engine fire detection and suppression systems to operate properly in the event of a fire due to failure of non-fireproof terminal blocks, which could result in an undetected and uncontrollable fire in an engine.

Bombardier won an order valued at $68.7 million from Atlantic Southeast Airlines for three CRJ200 regional jets. The order converts three options the Delta Connection carrier held for the CRJ. Bombardier will deliver the aircraft to ASA in the summer of 2003. ASA and Delta Connection affiliate Comair have combined to order 237 Bombardier CRJ100 and 200 aircraft, of which 191 have been delivered and 46 remain on backlog.

The wreckage of a Robinson R-22 helicopter, N7194J, was found by a hiker May 22 in mountainous terrain near Mammoth Lakes, Calif. The initial FAA report said it was unknown when the helicopter crashed. Both people on board suffered fatal injuries.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduated 30 in its first class of students from the new Aviation and Space Technology Academy. The academy, which was started by the university to address the nation's shortage of aircraft maintenance technicians, offers a 16-month program leading to certification of airframe and powerplant technicians. An additional four-month certification program in avionics maintenance also is offered. The academy will produce 180 new A&P technicians annually, said Program Director Stan Mackiewicz.

LUSCOMBE CRASH BLAMED ON LOSS OF CONTROL CONTINUITY - Both persons aboard a Luscombe LL-8-E single-engine aircraft were killed May 17 when the aircraft crashed after the pilot was unable to pull the aircraft out of a dive because an elevator control cable became detached.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) promised to make every effort to bring the National Aviation Capacity Expansion Act, (S.2039), to the Senate floor for a vote. The bill would enforce at a national level last fall's pact between Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (D) and Gov. George Ryan (R) to add runways and expand Chicago O'Hare, explore a new airport in Peotone, Ill., and keep Meigs Field operating.

HOUSE KEEPS REMAINING AIR CARRIER COMPENSATION INTACT - The House early Friday morning passed its version of an emergency spending bill, but eliminated a controversial provision that would have rescinded the remaining portion of direct compensation that had not already been handed out to air carriers under the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act.
