Aircraft parachute specialist Ballistic Recovery Systems, Inc. (BRS) stepped up its marketing campaign to sell its emergency parachute system to Cessna 172 operators after the Federal Aviation Administration last month awarded the company a supplemental type certificate for use of the system on the single-piston aircraft. BRS previously received FAA type certificate approval for its system as original equipment aboard Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft and nearly a decade ago won STCs for the retrofit of Cessna 150 and 152 aircraft.

Michael Johnston was appointed director of operations at eBizJets. Based at the company's headquarters in Norwell, Mass., Johnston will be responsible for managing and coordinating operational issues for senior management, client service teams and carrier partners. Johnston most recently managed the daily operations for the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston, overseeing a staff of 350 and a $40 million operating budget.

CHC Helicopters International plans to build a new passenger terminal and helicopter facility at Halifax, Nova Scotia International Airport. The $3.5 million, 32,500-square-foot terminal will be the first facility in the new Industrial Airfield Park opened by the Halifax International Airport Authority. The CHC terminal, scheduled to be finished late this year, will include an expanded hangar area and office space.
Jet Aviation added a Hawker 800 to its U.S. charter fleet. The mid-range business jet is based at Allegheny County Airport in Pennsylvania and is configured for eight passengers and two pilots.
National Transportation Safety Board renamed its Office of Family Affairs the Office of Transportation Disaster Assistance. "The name change reflects the broad range of the office's duties since it was established in 1996 and the extension of its services in many cases to all modes of transportation covered by the NTSB," the agency said.

Based at the Woodland Turbine facility near Sacramento, Calif., the six-seat CitationJet has a 1,200-nautical-mile range at speeds of up to 360 knots.
ENGINE PROBLEMS CITED IN MALIBU CRASH - National Transportation Safety Board investigators are trying to determine what caused engine problems in a Piper PA-46-350P Malibu that crashed Aug. 4 near Benton Harbor, Mich., killing all three people aboard. The owner pilot and his passengers were attempting to fly from Joe Foss Field Airport (FSD) in Sioux Falls, S.D. to Toledo Express Airport (TOL) in Toledo, Ohio. The aircraft departed at 1000 CDT. The pilot had filed an instrument flight plan, but VFR conditions prevailed along the route of flight.

Don White, a veteran avionics technician, has taken over as president of Pro Star Aviation in Londonderry, N.H. White was vice president of technical services for Stead Aviation from 1971-1986 and from 1986-2001 he was vice president of aircraft maintenance for Pentastar Aviation. Pro Star, located on the Manchester, N.H. Airport (MHT), is an avionics and maintenance repair facility that specializes in corporate and general aviation aircraft.
Cessna will roll out its 1,000th Caravan 208B in the fourth quarter this year. The 208B includes both the Grand Caravan and the Super Cargomaster. The Caravan fleet, which also includes the Caravan 675 and the Caravan Amphibian, now numbers 1,300.
GA leaders are meeting this week to hash out ideas that they will give to the Transportation Department on how to produce better pilot certificates; how to handle security for international operations, pilots and student pilots; how to improve charter security; and how to distribute and communicate temporary flight restrictions. DOT Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson appealed to the GA community for its input in those four areas during a meeting last month with trade association executives and several senior-level security officers.

Gulfstream took delivery of the 1,000th PW300 series turbofan engine manufactured by Pratt & Whitney. The PW306A engine will be installed on a super mid-size Gulfstream 200 business jet later this year. Gulfstream 200 aircraft are powered by two of the 6,000-pound-thrust Pratt & Whitney engines. There are 44 G200 aircraft in service with a combined total of 17,370 flight hours. General Dynamics, Gulfstream's parent company, acquired the rights to build the G200 when it bought Galaxy Aerospace last year.
