Noise programs for two general aviation airports in Florida are being reviewed by the FAA following the agency's recent approval of noise-exposure maps for Orlando Executive (ORL) and Ocala (OCF) airports. As a former TAG/AMI employee, I wanted you to know what a great article you wrote in the December Viewpoint. If I did not know better, I would have believed that you interviewed me and then shared all my feelings with your readers. Instead you just happened to hit the nail on the head. I might have added a theory or two to your conclusions, but the end result is that the FAA, which now stands for Federal Aviation Agenda, has proved itself to be nothing more than the "DMV" in the sky.

To most helicopter operators in the Gulf of Mexico, the two most important components of the FAA's ADS-B project are automated weather stations and VHF comm repeaters that will be installed aboard a selection of platforms, largely because they need the radio and weather pieces to fly more IFR missions while remaining within the envelope of the applicable FARs.

A Qantas Boeing 747-400 was reported to have lost all four generator control units (GCUs) about a half hour out from Bangkok, Thailand. The airplane was landing by using standby power and instruments. There were 334 passengers and no injuries were reported. Reports indicate that there was standing water in the galley above the GCUs and that the drip tray that would have prevented water intrusion was cracked.

THE PLEASANT, BUT business-like lady said, "Go right, and continue for 292 miles." And then she was silent. I groaned quietly. I'd always known this to be the longest, most numbing leg, but having such precise information about it somehow made the coming discomfort even worse. Meanwhile, my bride literally beamed with pleasure. "I love it," she said. I knew she would.

P&WC created a special parts-bin-engineering variant of the PT6A-42 engine for the Super King Air B200GT by mating the -42's 850-shp gearbox to the 1,181-shp gas generator of the -60A. The result is a highly flat-rated 850-shp engine that retains full power up to 24,000 feet. Improved metallurgy, among other detail improvements, enables the -52's gas generator to operate at 20°C hotter ITT limits and about 2.4 percent higher speeds with no decrease in durability. The -52's TBO remains 3,600 hours, the same as for the -42.

TWO OF THE BIGGEST selling points of private aircraft are the freedom and utility they provide to their owners. What other mode of transport combines the speed, comfort and versatility of a private aircraft and enables the owner to travel speedily wherever and whenever he wants to go? Until some scientist can perfect the "transporter" device made famous on the "Star Trek" television series -- "Beam me up, Scotty!" -- private aircraft will remain the ultimate mobility tool.

These graphs are designed to illustrate the performance of the Super King Air B200GT under a variety of range, payload, speed and density altitude conditions. Do not use these data for flight planning purposes because they are gross approximations of actual aircraft performance we computed or extrapolated using four-passenger payload numbers from the B200GT Flight Planning and Performance Guide.

I just finished reading your December Viewpoint and like many, who I am sure you have heard from, I couldn't agree more. Our bureaucrats, like our president, seem to think they can make up their own rules. (No, I'm not a Democrat, I'm an Independent who thinks most politicians are crazy.) Your editorial may not stop these folks, but at least it makes it all public.

Show me the money!" Those words, indelibly etched into the American experience by Rod Tidwell, the football star played by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the film "Jerry Maguire," capture perfectly the expectation of reward for effort invested in a free market. It resonates for the business aviation community, which is experiencing a boom that's unparalleled in its relatively short history. As more aircraft join the fleet, the operational pace begins to crescendo, and many FBOs, which fuel and service the fleet, are operating at max throttle.

In a recent letter to Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, Jacques Barrot, vice president of the European Commission, cautioned that congestion pricing at New York airports could affect the implementation of the U.S.-EU open-skies agreement in March. Barrot expressed concern about the effects congestion pricing could have on EU carriers and on "air services between the United States and the EU." The open-skies agreement "should deliver the benefits expected to both sides," he wrote.

The FAA has issued a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) to owners and operators regarding new training requirements for pilots of CE-208 (Cessna Caravan I) and CE-208B (Grand Caravan) turboprops for flight into known icing conditions. The SAFO notes the adoption of AD 2007-10-15, which requires the addition of a supplement to the Pilot's Operating Handbook detailing known icing equipment.
