Midas Commuter Airlines has received authority to operate non-scheduled cargo service between Venezuela and Miami; New York; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Houston, and Washington/Baltimore via intermediate points Netherlands West Indies, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. The Venezuelan carrier also was awarded authority to conduct charter cargo flights between Venezuela and the U.S. Midas plans to operate the U.S. service with a DC-8 aircraft wet-leased from Fine Airlines (DAILY, Nov. 15, 1994). All Nippon Airways subsidiary Air Nippon (ANK) took delivery yesterday of the first of eight 737-500s it has on order from Boeing. Air Nippon, which has options for seven more of the 126-seat aircraft, operates scheduled service on 43 routes linking 34 cities in Japan. ANK also operates a daily joint flight between Fukuoka and Taipei with Eva Airways. The 737-500s will replace 737-200s and Japanese-made YS-11s in the ANK fleet, which currently numbers 39 aircraft and includes seven A320s and one 767-300.
The John Wayne Airport Board of Commissioners decided unanimously Tuesday night that the Orange County (Calif.) Board of Supervisors should not enter into a request for qualifications process for the sale of the airport, airport spokeswoman Courtney Wiercioch told The DAILY yesterday. The airport commission will make its recommendation April 18, when the supervisors are to decide whether to issue the RFQ.
Wicat has received orders from United and German carrier Hapag-Lloyd for its computer-based training systems. It will provide computer-based training stations for delivery of maintenance CBT at various United locations, including Washington Dulles, New York Kennedy, Miami and Oakland. Wicat's high-performance CBT workstations will be used for maintenance training with new Boeing 777 courseware. Hapag-Lloyd also has ordered Wicat flight training programs and an upgrade of its CBT delivery system.
Air-India has reinstated its service to Perth after a gap of five years, an AI spokesman said. The biweekly flight, operated with an A310, is the only direct service between the two countries, he added.
Airmax President Kenneth Ryan, citing a recent study, says companies with fewer than 500 employees and growth rates of more than 15% a year account for 49% of all goods and services bought and sold in the U.S., creating a "major new market for air cargo."
Air Nova and AirBC, in separate applications, have asked DOT for the right to provide scheduled and charter combination service between points in Canada and points in the U.S. The carriers also requested authority to code share with Air Canada on service between Canada and the U.S. Such operations will be operated by Air Nova and AirBC with their own crews and equipment, using the Air Canada designator code.
James Woolsey, senior editor and associate publisher of Air Transport World, will receive the Lauren Lyman Award, sponsored by United Technologies Corp., May 5 at a National Press Club luncheon hosted by the Society of Senior Aerospace Executives. Woolsey joined Aviation DAILY then parent American Aviation Publications in 1964, wrote for Aviation Week and Space Technology in 1969, and joined Air Transport World in 1972.
Mesaba Aviation, operating as Northwest Airlink, will begin the only scheduled service from Benton Harbor, Mich., June 20, linking it to Northwest's Detroit hub. Northwest and Mesaba operate more than 450 daily departures at Detroit. Mesaba will offer three daily flights with 37-seat de Havilland Dash 8s and 19-seat Fairchild Metro IIIs.
Recently privatized BWIA International Airways is joining the LatinPass frequent flyer program, the carrier said this week (DAILY, March 30). The agreement with LatinPass, which comprises 14 Latin carriers and USAir, enables BWIA passengers to accrue mileage when they fly BWIA or any of the participating carriers and redeem the miles for travel on the route networks of LatinPass member carriers.
Qantas on Monday launched its 75th anniversary celebration with the unveiling of an anniversary logo on the fuselage of one of its 747-400s. The airline plans to apply the logo to all 132 of its aircraft, including its regional fleet, in the next few weeks. Qantas has planned a number of events to mark its anniversary throughout the year, culminating in a series of birthday dinner parties around the world in late November.
Delta Connection affiliate Business Express flew 29.7 million revenue passenger miles last month, 6.8% fewer than in March 1994. Capacity declined 1.9% to 73.5 million available seat miles, lowering the load factor 2.1 points to 40.4%.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) will take over the administration of the country's air routes in the next three years, The Economic Daily reported. The transfer of the administrative duties from China's air force to the CAAC is slated to begin this year. The newspaper said preparations for the transfer likely will include the restructuring of the routes.
A syndicate of international banks has agreed to finance a portion of Air Canada's progress payments in connection with the carrier's order of six Airbus A340s and 25 A319s. The banking syndicate is led by Canada's CIBC, which acted as arranger for the syndicate, and Europe's Bayerische Landesbank and Credit Lyonnais. The transaction, valued at US$165 million, will result in financing by the syndicate of a substantial portion of future progress payments for these aircraft, Air Canada said.
Japan Air System has selected AlliedSignal to supply the wheels and brakes for its fleet of Boeing 777s. AlliedSignal Aircraft Landing Systems will provide Bendix main and nose wheels and brakes for the seven 777s JAS has ordered. JAS expects to begin taking delivery of its 777s in September 1996.
The National Transportation Safety Board is shopping for aircraft to test the effect wake turbulence might have had on USAir Flight 427, a 737 that crashed near Pittsburgh last September, killing all 132 people aboard. The safety board plans to obtain Boeing 727 and 737 aircraft to recreate the circumstances that occurred before the crash. At the NTSB hearing earlier this year, Boeing simulations showed that wake vortices from a Delta 727, about four miles ahead of the USAir 737, would have reached Flight 427 at about the time it began its fatal nosedive (DAILY, Jan.
Martinair Holland has begun weekly service between Amsterdam and Freeport, Bahamas, in what it described as the only scheduled service between Freeport and the European continent currently being offered. "This has been a period of growth for Martinair," said Janice Holden, VP-marketing&commercial affairs, pointing out that the airline began service to Barbados in November. It also operates from Montego Bay, Jamaica; Holguin and Varadero, Cuba; Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and Margarita Island, Venezuela.
AQUA Software Products Inc. (ASPI), responding to the cap on travel agent commissions instituted by many U.S. airlines, has unveiled a new product, AQUA Commission Maximizer, that it said will help travel agencies maximize revenue from airline ticket sales. Commission Maximizer is designed to analyze individual passenger name records, price all possible ticket divisions, and notify the agency of the combinations that provide maximum commission without increasing the cost to the customer.
Delta Connection carrier SkyWest's March traffic rose 15.8% from March 1994, but its load factor dropped 3.8 percentage points to below 50% as capacity increased 25.2%. In the first three months of 1995, the final quarter of SkyWest's fiscal year, traffic rose 18.8% on 27.1% more capacity, depressing the load factor 3.2 points. "Although disappointing, our performance appears to be consistent with the rest of the industry," said Ron Reber, chief operating officer.
United Parcel Service and FedEx both unveiled plans yesterday to begin same-day delivery service this spring in the domestic U.S. market. The UPS product, UPS SonicAir Service, is scheduled to be available Monday to UPS's national accounts and in May to all customers. FedEx SameDay becomes available June 1 to and from most U.S. locations. Both companies will charge customers a premium for the same-day or next-flight-out service, both are offering service guarantees, and both are using partners or subsidiaries to make the service available.
Emery Worldwide has formed its own operating company in Chile, Emery Worldwide de Chile, and opened Emery House, a full-service facility in Santiago that houses its South America Division management staff and its local office personnel. Steve Johnson, an eight-year veteran, is the division manager for South America. Emery said its air freight volume in the Chilean market rose 10% between 1993 and 1994, and 1995 January- February tonnage was double that of the same period in 1994.
Citing lack of jurisdiction, DOT dismissed this week a rates and charges complaint filed by Continental Micronesia against the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Commonwealth Ports Authority. The airline had challenged fees imposed since July 1993 at three airports - Saipan, West Tinian and Rota. DOT ruled that the fees were imposed pursuant to a written agreement and were existing fees not in dispute as of Aug. 23, 1994 - both exclusions from the 1994 rates and charges legislation.
Mesa Air Group's systemwide traffic rose 19% last month on 22.3% more capacity, resulting in a load factor decline of 1.4 percentage points. The number of passengers carried fell 21.3%. Through the first three months, its traffic was up 16.1% on 20.5% more capacity, pushing the load factor down 1.8 points.
