Pakistan last month regained a Category 1 rating under FAA's International Aviation Safety Assessment program. The rating, indicates compliance with ICAO safety standards and comes following a reassessment by FAA of the Pakistan's civil aviation authority. Pakistan is a U.S. open-skies partner.

Australian regulators will speed up a planned audit of Ansett Australia Airlines after the carrier recently admitted to missing several significant maintenance check deadlines on its Boeing 767s (DAILY, Jan. 2). The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is planning to perform the audit -- originally slated for later in the year -- by the end of this month or early February, The DAILY has learned. An official announcement from CASA is expected soon.

Delta's operational troubles are starting to worry Wall Street analysts as cancellations continue to plague the carrier. The airline canceled more than 3,500 flights last month because pilots are refusing overtime flying, a spokeswoman said. Specifically, over the New Year's holiday weekend the airline canceled nearly 1,500 flights from Dec. 30 to Jan. 2 due solely to "pilot unavailability." The numbers do not include cancellations due to the snowstorm in the Northeast last weekend.

The city of Buenos Aires and Argentina's Ministry of Economy will hold a public hearing Feb. 12 to consider options for improving and/or moving facilities from Aeroparque, the downtown airport. Improvements already have been completed with investments of $20 million, including a new 5,000-square-meter covered passenger service area with a food court and an international departure hall.

Aerospace Industries Association yesterday called on the administration of President-elect Bush to act swiftly in establishing a Presidential Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, as called for by law. It also called on Bush to establish a new National Aerospace Council and to "significantly increase" FAA funding next year. The presidential commission is supposed to be in place by March 1.

Ryanair yesterday reached agreement with its pilots' union, offering a 15% pay raise over five years plus stock options. Last November, Ryanair's pilots threatened to strike over the issue of long work hours, but the 24-hour stoppage eventually was called off as pilots resumed talks with management. Ryanair has agreed to the 15% pay hike and granted each of its 220 pilots more than 100,000 Irish pounds (US$119,500) in Ryanair shares at a price of 10 euros each. The airline's shares outperformed the London market by 130% since Jan. 1, 2000.

AOPA Air Safety Foundation said it provides web links to both operations manuals and simulators for all major GPS receivers. Bruce Landsberg, executive director, said that while GPS navigation has "become a navigational standard, unfortunately, GPS receivers are anything but standardized."

Boeing said yesterday that it delivered 489 commercial aircraft last year, including 130 in the fourth quarter. The next-generation 737 dominated deliveries with 279 for the year and 70 for the quarter. Only two classic 737s were delivered last year. Boeing delivered 32 717s during the year, 12 in the fourth quarter. It said 747 deliveries totaled 25 and six, 757 deliveries 45 and eight, 767 deliveries 44 and 14, 777 deliveries 55 and 17, MD-90s three and three, and MD-11s four.

The European Commission will protect Airbus from U.S. attacks concerning government subsidies and push through retaliation, Pascal Lamy, European trade commissioner, said in a radio interview. Recent U.S. allegations that government loans for the development of the Airbus A380 violate World Trade Organization rules "do not hold water," Lamy added. "We are there to act as a shield, a solid and thick shield that will stay in place. And I can say that we will defend our Airbus."

Legend Airlines last week secured $20 million in financing from New York-based Legend Funding Group Inc., but it must await approval from the bankruptcy court Jan. 12 to use the funds. Legend owes unsecured creditors more than $16 million, and they can reportedly divide the loan among themselves.

Composite Structures, LLC, was selected by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to provide wing-strengthening kits for the new blended winglets on the Boeing Business Jet. The winglets were recently approved by FAA for use on the Boeing Business Jet, a variation of Boeing's 737. APB also is certifying the 737-800 winglet program.

LanChile and Iberia on Jan. 1 started to code share on the nonstop Santiago-Madrid-Santiago route, operating 13 weekly frequencies with Airbus 340s. The first phase will provide extensions from Madrid to Paris, Rome, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Bilbao and later include the rest of Europe. Because both carriers are members of the oneworld alliance, code sharing will benefit passengers with quicker connections, baggage check-in and boarding passes through to final destination, as well as shared frequent flyer privileges.

Denver, the 10th largest world airport, had the highest percentage of international passenger growth among leading airports in 1999, the most recently available data. Denver's international passenger total grew 37.7% to 689,000. Next in line were Seoul, 19% and 15.5 million, Atlanta, 18.6% and 5.1 million, and Detroit, 15.3% and 3.4 million.

Cheap Tickets reported that it has expanded its supplier agreements and now claims it will be able to offer consumers twice as many discounted airfares compared with just a year ago. Cheap Tickets doubled its supply of non-published fares to 1 million by expanding its existing supplier agreements, along with signing new supplier agreements. Cheap Tickets currently has deals with 40 airlines and offers more than 1 million discounted, non-published fares.

KLM plans to spend roughly 3 million guilders (US$1.3 million) to build a new animal quarantine station at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport scheduled for completion midyear. Once the new station is operational, KLM claims it will be the only cargo-handling company at the airport to meet European Union import regulations on livestock.

United plans to offer nonstop seasonal service between Denver and Anchorage beginning June 7. The new nonstop seasonal flight will replace United's existing one-stop service between Denver and Anchorage via Seattle. United said the seasonal flight will complement its existing year-round nonstop service between Anchorage and Seattle. The new United service will be operated with Airbus A320s, providing a nonstop flights everyday until Sept. 4.

Sun Country last week said its travel agency retail commissions for domestic and international telephone bookings will be 3% uncapped and 5% uncapped for domestic and international electronic bookings. Sun Country will offer 8% commissions for most air-inclusive vacations booked on the telephone and 10% for vacations booked electronically.

Mesa Air last week posted a net profit of $16.9 million for its fiscal fourth quarter, compared with a $23.7 million net loss in 1999. The profit includes a positive net benefit of $1.6 million thanks to an accounting change. In the quarter, the airline decided to change its accounting for maintenance on CRJ and Dash-8-200s from the accrual method to the direct expense method. The company also plans to adopt the direct expense method for its new Embraer ERJs.
