Japan Airlines and Japan Air System on Friday received the green light from Japan's Fair Trade Commission to proceed with their revised merger plan that will result in the return of nine Haneda Airport slots and a fare reduction. Last month, the government pointed out several concerns about the merger, most specifically related to the domestic passenger market. Both carriers last Tuesday, however, submitted a revised proposal, based on FTC's comments. The airlines will now put the merger up for a vote at their respective annual meetings in June.

Lufthansa plans to add 18 aircraft to its active fleet in the course of the summer after parking 43 late last year. Chairman and CEO Juergen Weber said that the carrier is responding to slowly improving market conditions, but that it will be careful not to increase capacity too much. As part of the move, three Airbus A310s will be shifted from short-haul to long-haul flying, and two Boeing 747-200s mothballed in the Arizona desert will be deployed on the Frankfurt-Vancouver route.According to Weber, the level of premium traffic is almost back to normal.

One method proposed is to build the runway on a floating steel structure, called a Megafloat.

FAA has announced that an environmental impact statement will be prepared to consider alternatives to the Panama City-Bay County Airport's proposal to relocate to a new site. Alternatives to be considered in the study include expansion at the present site, relocation, or no action. An environmental assessment of expansion options was initiated in the 1990s but was deferred due to opposition to extending a runway into Goose Bayou. Further studies determined that relocation was a viable option.

AirTran yesterday reported a $3 million net loss for the first quarter, but executives predicted that the carrier would be profitable in the second quarter and for the full year. The loss was slightly less than analysts expected but worse than the $8.8 million profit in the same 2001 period. The airline took a $5.6 million non-cash credit due to the change in value of its fuel-related derivative contracts and a $0.8 million income tax benefit. Without these, AirTran would have lost $9.4 million.
