The Asia/Pacific region is not developing an Air Traffic Management master plan the way the U.S. and Europe are, but ATC modernization is nonetheless moving rapidly here - and in some cases it's out in front. Australia, for example, is leapfrogging a stage in technology by deploying Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) nationwide. This will provide surveillance over the Outback without resorting to the installation of radar, which is far more expensive than the next-generation satellite-navigation capability of ADS-B.

Spirit's decision to cut its premium product and charge for extra checked bags and beverages stems from the airline's resolve to focus to price rather than product. CEO Ben Baldanza told The DAILY that two models emerge from airlines that are "perennially successful." Those carriers either follow the Singapore Airlines' strategy and focus on product or adopt the Ryanair and Southwest philosophy and concentrate on price, Baldanza said, adding that Spirit believes the Ryanair model makes the most sense.
