In 2011, the industry consumed 51.3 million gallons of jet fuel per day, compared with 55.3 million gallons per day in 2005. However, the price of jet fuel continues to rise, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Lufthansa Technik (LHT), following a careful and slow expansion of its capabilities, can now handle three widebody completions simultaneously–ust in time for a peak in that market, said Walter Heerdt, senior VP-marketing and sales at the recent Asian Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Shanghai. A Boeing 767-400 now being completed at LHT’s Hamburg facility will be joined by a 747-8, the first of that model, in September and another in December or January, Heerdt says.

Airbus soon could begin production of its first narrowbody for American Airlines, according to a request by the carrier for approval to make a multi-million-dollar pre-delivery payment. The airline in July 2011 unveiled a major fleet renewal plan that could add at least 550 and as many as 1,000 narrowbodies to its operations in the coming decade. In a then-surprising move, American split the order between Airbus and Boeing after years of relying on U.S. manufacturers to supply its single-aisle mainline aircraft. Fleet Renewal

With the government already struggling to overcome technical and procedural hurdles to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in civil airspace, the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) are teaming up to make sure policy makers craft privacy rules for UAVs before they take flight. The two advocacy groups met last week to see where they have common ground.

Boeing delivered 99 737s and 20 777s in the first quarter, setting a pace that contributed to 137 commercial aircraft deliveries so far in 2012. The tally, which also included five 787s, six 747-8s and seven 767s, compares with104 commercial deliveries for the same period in 2011 and 108 in 2010, and reflects the first significant indications of Boeing’s rising production and delivery rates across the 737, 747-8, 777 and 787 lines.

The formation of a large multinational airspace block in Western Europe is being delayed because the stakeholders are still divided on critical issues, says Switzerland’s air traffic control provider. In its annual report for 2011, Skyguide reveals problems among the members of the functional airspace block (FAB) that will cover most of Western Europe. This is the biggest—and most important—of the nine FABs that are being formed as a key element of the Single European Sky process.
