The robotic revolution in aviation is actually creating more pilots, an industry executive says, a change that “will drive new players, new vehicles, new operators” into a U.S. airspace system that’s not quite ready for the coming wave of commercial and military unmanned aircraft. For example, said John Langford, president of Aurora Flight Sciences Corp., current regulations for the national airspace system (NAS) make no distinction between light hobbyist craft and sophisticated commercial or military aircraft.

Nok Air has launched seasonal charter flights to Nanjing in southern China as the Thai carrier contemplates again becoming a fully fledged international carrier. The airline began operating 10 Boeing 737-800 roundtrip services between Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport and Nanjing Lukou International Airport on March 27 and is scheduled to operate the last flight on April 28.
India’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) industry could expand by 300% to $1.369 billion by 2020 from $440 million in 2010, boosted by a government plan to exempt aircraft spares and other equipment from customs duties, according to a civil aviation ministry report.
Airlines cannot be passive when it comes to jet fuel prices, Delta CEO Richard Anderson said yesterday, but he steadfastly refused to talk about rampant media reports that his airline is considering the acquisition of an oil refinery as a way to protect itself against high fuel costs.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s South Runway 9R/27L will close next week as part of the airport’s expansion plan. General aviation and commuter aircraft will be the most affected by the closure; most of this traffic from April 18 will be diverted to the North Runway and during heavy demand to the airport’s Crosswind Runway. The upgraded South Runway is expected to reopen in late 2014. The $791 million project will extend 9R/27L to 8,000 feet.
Boeing, a commercial aviation and defense colossus, may have clashed recently with commercial air carriers over the issue of export financing. But the head of the company’s defense division reached out to the commercial side of the industry in an April 12 speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, saying that America needs a “game plan” for aviation.
Antiguan carrier LIAT’s is revamping its cargo operation just one year after placing a dedicated freighter into service. In the past weeks, LIAT has launched an interline agreement with Commercial Aviation Services of Miami to fly cargo operations between Puerto Rico, Barbados and Colombia, and has now announced a plan to outsource most of its ground-handling in Antigua to Caribbean Airport Services (CAS), a company in which LIAT holds a 51% stake.
The fallout from Colgan Air’s demise continues to benefit its rivals, with United Airlines’ Express division passing ground-handling contracts at nine stations to a subsidiary of American Eagle Airlines, itself the subject of a Chapter 11 reorganization.
In advance of its formal takeover of BMI British Midlands International, British Airways has begun talks with labor groups over staff reductions that will eliminate about 1,200 jobs from BMI’s 2,700-strong workforce.
Wholly owned Southwest Airlines subsidiary AirTran Airways will start services from California’s Orange County to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City, marking the start of the first international flights from John Wayne Airport (JWA) to Mexico. The flights are scheduled to begin on June 3 and mark the airport’s first success in attracting carriers to use it for flights to Mexico as an alternative international gateway to nearby Southern California airports, such as Los Angeles International and Ontario.
United Airlines and Delta Air Lines could be facing maintenance, repair and overhaul costs greater than the industry norm in the next three years, according to an analysis of Aviation Week Intelligence Network (AWIN) data. Delta is expected to need 416 heavy maintenance checks across its fleet, compared with 289 for American Airlines and 184 for US Airways, the AWIN data show. Among the large U.S. carriers, United ranks second in terms of coming maintenance expense with an expected need for 396 heavy checks in the next three years.
