Eclipse Aerospace has restarted production of its storied very-light jet (VLJ), but this time with more modest production goals. The original Eclipse Aviation was formed in 1998 with the vision of selling thousands of million-dollar jets into a booming air-taxi market. Instead, its biggest customer, unable to raise financing in an economic downturn, closed its doors in 2008, taking with it 1,400 of the 2,600 orders on the manufacturer’s books.

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways is ruling out deferring aircraft deliveries even as it accelerates retirements of Boeing 747-400s in response to weak demand. “It is always the case that when oil prices are high you want your new aircraft,” says CEO John Slosar. “Even though your business might be tough, but the last thing you want to do is hold on to your old aircraft, which are the least fuel-efficient.” Cathay expects delivery of 24 777-300ERs and 14-15 Airbus A330s in the coming three years.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will hold its next annual general meeting June 2-4, 2013, in Cape Town, South Africa. South African Airways will be the host airline. The airline’s CEO Siza Mzimela says she hopes the event will promote key issues for the air transport industry in Africa—safety, infrastructure and the awareness of the role air transport plays for economic development. The decision was announced on the final day of IATA’s 2012 annual general meeting, which was held in Beijing June 10-12.

Delta Air Lines’ proposed jet fuel yield from its planned refinery acquisition in Pennsylvania is significantly above the average produced by any U.S. refining region, according to an analysis by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The airline is purchasing an idled refinery in Trainer, Pa., from Phillips 66 for $150 million and plans to invest another $100 million to increase the facility's jet-fuel yield to 32% from 14% of its 185,000 barrel/day (bpd) capacity.

The head of Airbus’s Chinese operation is optimistic that a dispute over European environmental regulation will not force the company to find new buyers for aircraft being blocked by Beijing. If necessary, Airbus could easily find new customers for 35 A330s that the government refuses to authorize, since demand for the type is strong, said Laurence Barron, Airbus’s president for China during this week's International Air Transport Association annual general meeting. However, he added, “My own view is that we will not get to that stage.”

This year’s customer satisfaction survey by J.D. Power and Associates shows that airline passengers remain irked by the industry’s adoption of ancillary fees to such an extent that their current perception of North American operators reverses the trend of increasing approval seen in recent years.
