Taiwan’s third-largest airline TransAsia Airways wants to work with the country’s two larger competitors to establish a low-cost carrier (LCC). The U.S. Transportation Department‘s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is calling on the FAA to improve management of a program that requires airports to assess potential wildlife aircraft strikes. “FAA has not developed robust inspection practices, and its inspectors do not have the technical expertise to effectively oversee the Program,” the report says of the FAA's Wildlife Hazard Mitigation Program.

The University of North Dakota (UND) is getting ready to launch an unusual joint program with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department that it hopes will establish a template for law enforcement use of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Planned to begin in early October, pending FAA approvals, the program will see UND Department of Aviation personnel operating up to four small fixed- and rotary-wing UAS in support of the police anywhere within 16 counties in northeast North Dakota.

Lufthansa’s flight attendants today are expected to reveal strike details after the airline has submitted a renewed proposal for an updated collective bargaining agreement. It is unclear if the attendants’ union, UFO, will launch an immediate strike or a more limited industrial action, but the airline is preparing for some form of disruption. “We have to be prepared that there will be turbulence,” says the airline’s executive board member for human resources, Stefan Lauer.
