United Parcel Service (UPS) is abandoning its proposed €5.2 billion ($6.8 billion) bid for Dutch rival TNT Express because it expects a rejection from the European Commission (EC). The proposed acquisition would have reduced the four global integrators—UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and TNT Express–to three, with a major stronghold on the sector by U.S. companies.
Grupo TAM has notified the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it will stop reporting certain financial results to the regulator as the Brazilian carrier completes its integration into Latam Airlines Group. This procedural step is the latest in a series of financial reporting changes that Chile’s LAN Airlines and TAM have taken to integrate into the region’s largest carrier. However, the two brands will continue operating as separate carriers in the near term, a spokeswoman says.

Honeywell’s fix for potential Wi-Fi interference with its Phase 3 Display Units in cockpits includes the addition of specialized gaskets designed to shield against electromagnetic interference, the manufacturer says.
Honeywell says it has resolved interference issues with its Phase 3 Display Unit that prohibited inflight use of Wi-Fi in cockpits fitted with such avionics, and will be able to offer the fix internationally by March. The interference was discovered during trials to certify computer tablet devices as electronic flight bags. Honeywell is not publicly providing details of its fix, but a company spokesman tells Aviation Week that “a solution has been identified and was implemented in the fourth quarter of 2012.”
Delta Air Lines' new capacity agreement with Pinnacle Airlines lets the regional carrier return all of its 140 Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft and spare engines to the mainline carrier without performing any of the maintenance that makes the 50-seat planes more attractive for lease or sale. Delta is shedding 50-seaters from its operations to avoid hundreds of millions of dollars in maintenance costs over the next few years.

U.S. startup People Express says it is about three weeks from acquiring an undisclosed charter airline, providing the carrier the necessary certificate to begin operations, President Michael Morisi tells Aviation Week. The move eliminates the need for People Express to continue with a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) certification process that began in March 2012, Morisi says, adding that People Express already has a memorandum of understanding to acquire the charter airline.

The Indian Government has dismissed Kingfisher Airlines’ latest revival plan, saying the proposal “may not guarantee a reliable service.” “We want an airline to operate in consistent, efficient and reliable manner. The revival plan, which was submitted by the airline, had lots of issues regarding lenders, staff payment which we felt may not lead to reliable services,” a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official told media Jan. 11.
Despite saying it has full confidence in the safety of Boeing’s new 787, the FAA has launched a technical investigation into the root causes of a series of electrical issues that have dogged the widebody since its entry into service with international and U.S. carriers.

Terry Twigger, CEO of U.K.–based aerospace company Meggitt, has announced his retirement. Twigger, who has served as CEO for 12 years, will step down at the company’s next annual general meeting on May 1 and will be succeeded by Stephen Young, who has been finance director since 2004. In a statement, the company said Twigger will “continue at the company as an employee and provide support to the board and Stephen Young until his retirement on June 30.”
Singapore Airlines has signed a firm order for five more Airbus A380s and 20 A350-900s. The order is based on a memorandum of understanding published last October. It was completed late last year and announced now. The additional A380 order raises Airbus’ order intake for the type to nine aircraft in 2012 following a commitment for four aircraft from Transaero. Airbus is understood to be adding the order to its 2012 figures when it publishes details of its orders and deliveries this week.
