Latam Airlines Group has made significant progress in its efforts to turn around its Brazilian domestic operation. TAM Airlines, the Brazilian part of the Latam Group, achieved a 19% improvement in unit revenue in the third quarter of 2013 and now appears to have the worst of its crisis behind it. The airline improved its load factor 3.6 percentage points over the same period last year and by more than 14 points compared to the third quarter of 2011. The Brazilian domestic operation makes up about one-third of Latam’s total capacity.
AMR Corp. and US Airways are just weeks from finalizing their proposed merger, following a settlement deal with the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) that calls for the divestiture of slots at Washington Reagan National Airport and New York LaGuardia Airport as well as gates at Boston Logan International, Chicago O’Hare International, Dallas Love Field, Los Angeles International and Miami International airports. The deal comes three months after the DOJ filed a court motion to stop the merger based on claims it would stifle domestic competition.
The operator of Rome’s airport system has warned that its full-year results will depend on the continuing operation of Alitalia and the struggling airline’s compliance with terms of payment. Alitalia owes Gemina, parent company of Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), about €102 million ($137 million). ADR manages Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. “The extremely fragile and unstable situation faced by Alitalia, which accounts for 46% of air traffic at Rome Fiumicino Airport, is a matter of great concern,” notes Gemina.

China Eastern Airlines has thwarted an attempt by China Southern Airlines to set up a base at Shanghai that may have intensified competition for international services to the country’s largest city. Thai AirAsia is achieving healthy profit growth to match its rapid fleet expansion, which suggests why other airlines are rushing to set up operations in Thailand. The carrier achieved a profit of 297.3 million Baht ($9.4 million) in the third quarter, which was up nearly 60% versus the same period last year. The increase was even more notable for the nine months ending Sept. 30, with profits up 70% to 1.5 billion Baht. Capacity for the nine months was 22% higher, thanks to a net increase of six Airbus A320s.
Global Aviation Holdings and its two operating units World Airways and North American Airlines have filed for Chapter 11 protection to facilitate a fleet and staff reduction plan caused by the continued slump in airfreight demand and a recent change in U.S. military spending that affected 20% of World’s revenue. The cuts will include a 16% reduction in staff in the next 90 days.
Competitors of Emirates Airline, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways have to dig deep into capacity statistics to find markets where the mighty Persian Gulf carriers are not succeeding. The good news is that there are some, but the bad news is that where it really counts, these airlines’ growth rates are still frightening to the rest of the world.
A glut in cargo capacity continues to hamper the market for large freighters, especially for used aircraft. International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures show revenue ton-kilometers up 0.5% through Oct. 30, while capacity is up 1.9%. Although IATA says October’s cargo volumes hit a 25-month high, the turnaround is not coming quickly enough to help many carriers with dedicated cargo capacity.
FlyBE will perform another restructuring that includes route and job cuts and changes to the airline’s fleet, despite the progress the company has made with its previous turnaround efforts.

Despite recent encouraging signs pointing to a commercial aftermarket rebound, headwinds will be strong enough to limit significant growth in 2014, a Canaccord Genuity survey of major industry players concludes. “Based on current visibility within the industry, we expect improvement in 2014 over 2013, but a significant bounce-back after the weaker-than-expected 2013 is not expected,” writes analyst Ken Herbert in his first quarterly Canaccord Global Commercial Aerospace Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) survey.
