A glut in cargo capacity continues to hamper the market for large freighters, especially for used aircraft. International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures show revenue ton-kilometers up 0.5% through Oct. 30, while capacity is up 1.9%. Although IATA says October’s cargo volumes hit a 25-month high, the turnaround is not coming quickly enough to help many carriers with dedicated cargo capacity.
FlyBE will perform another restructuring that includes route and job cuts and changes to the airline’s fleet, despite the progress the company has made with its previous turnaround efforts.

Despite recent encouraging signs pointing to a commercial aftermarket rebound, headwinds will be strong enough to limit significant growth in 2014, a Canaccord Genuity survey of major industry players concludes. “Based on current visibility within the industry, we expect improvement in 2014 over 2013, but a significant bounce-back after the weaker-than-expected 2013 is not expected,” writes analyst Ken Herbert in his first quarterly Canaccord Global Commercial Aerospace Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) survey.
Lease rates for larger narrowbodies are creeping up along with global traffic, and lessors report little to no availability of the most popular models for several years. Air Lease Corp. last month placed the last of 39 current-generation Airbus A320s in its portfolio or on order. The only remaining A320ceo-family aircraft the lessor has coming are A321s, set for delivery in 2014 and 2015, and these too have lessees lined up.
As Australia’s government moves closer to giving the go-ahead for a second Sydney airport, a leading transportation group stresses that such a decision would not obviate the need to ease restrictions at the existing Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.
Asiana Airlines saw its net profit rise 3.3% to 82.8 billion won ($77.2 million) in the third quarter, although as with its rival Korean Air, a strengthening local currency helped mask a decline in operating profits. The profitable third quarter was not enough to offset losses earlier in the year for Asiana. It lost 45.6 billion won through the first three quarters, compared to a profit of 40.8 billion won in the same period last year.

Boeing’s second 787-9 test aircraft last week joined the development and certification effort for the stretched derivative program. The aircraft, ZB002, took off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., on Nov. 7 before spending several hours conducting tests over the Puget Sound and eastern parts of the state. The second aircraft will be aimed principally at systems and interior evaluation, and joins the first 787-9 which has accumulated 41 flights and more than 130 flight hours.
Europe’s Sesar air traffic management (ATM) modernization program has funded nine projects to demonstrate integration of unmanned aircraft systems into non-segregated airspace. The projects will support plans to begin integration of UAS into European airspace in 2016. Backed by €4 million ($5.4 million) in funding from the Sesar Joint Undertaking (JU), the demonstrations include integrated pre-operational flight trails and are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2015.
International Airlines Group (IAG) is upbeat about the restructuring progress at its struggling subsidiary Iberia. The Spanish airline posted a €74 million ($99 million) operating profit in the third quarter of 2013, which is equivalent to a 6.2% operating margin. “We took the right decisions at Iberia and we are seeing slightly better yield and revenue performance,” IAG CEO Willie Walsh said last week during IAG’s third quarter earnings call.

Key documents laying out the path to integration of unmanned aircraft in national airspace have been released by the U.S. government, but achieving the goals will require “predictable and reliable” funding for the NextGen airspace modernization program, cautions FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

China is taking new steps to liberalize its airline sector by relaxing minimum fare rules and further encouraging the growth of budget airlines and new market entrants. Following moves to free up the industry announced earlier this year, the latest measures confirm suspicions that a wider government push to increase competition in the economy has spread to commercial aviation, to the detriment of the major incumbents.
Qantas Airways will close one of its two heavy maintenance bases in March, rejecting a union’s last-ditch proposal to keep the facility open. The decision to close the base at Avalon Airport, near Melbourne, means that Qantas will be left with just one heavy maintenance facility, in Brisbane. The Avalon base primarily handles Boeing 747-400 maintenance, but the gradual phase-out of this aircraft type is reducing its scheduled workload.
