Qantas is laying off another 167 staff from its engineering department, the latest step in the airline’s plan to cut 5,000 positions from its workforce within three years. The carrier says it has already cut 2,200 employees through the end of June, and expects to lay off another 1,800 by the end of June 2015. The overall target of 5,000 was announced in February, as the airline looks to trim A$2 billion ($1.9 billion) in costs over three years to stem rising losses.

Expansion in air traffic volumes is starting to accelerate again after a slowdown in growth earlier in the year, with global passenger traffic rising a solid 6.2% in May compared to a year ago, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said. Passenger traffic there rose 12.7% in May, or double the industry average.

Responding to an auditor’s report critical of its progress toward integrating unmanned aircraft into national airspace, the FAA says it expects to complete a plan by the end of August for a phased implementation approach over five years. The Transportation Department’s Inspector General’s (IG) conclusion that FAA will miss Congress’s September 2015 deadline for integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace system (NAS) will come as a surprise to no one watching its progress.

With the first ballots set to be cast in two weeks, Virgin America is seeking to convince its 862 flight attendants to vote against joining the Transport Workers Union, or TWU. But it won’t be easy. The union claims that well more than 50% of eligible voters signed union authorization cards, a possible sign the TWU has an advantage. “We have an overwhelming majority right now,” TWU Vice President Thom McDaniel said in an interview, declining to state the exact number.
