Jan. 18, 1950 —Boeing and Pan American World Airways tested the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser’s ability to handle a 148,000-lb. maximum gross takeoff weight. Pan Am wanted to be able to carry larger payloads on long-haul overseas flights. Jan. 17, 1975 —Boeing began ground testing its 727 propulsion system with a refanned, nacelle-equipped Pratty & Whitney JTBD to reduce noise.
