Latin American airlines’ growth will be stymied unless the region’s governments ease the tax burden on airlines and passengers, LATAM Airlines Group CEO Enrique Cueto said.
BOSTON—Airlines have had mixed reactions to a new transportation policy recently unveiled by Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau, which calls for legislation to change foreign ownership rules as well as several other initiatives. “International companies will be able to own 49% of an airline in Canada—up from the current 25%—but a single foreign investor, or combination of foreign investors, will be capped at a maximum of 25%,” the transport minister said during a Nov. 3 speech in Montreal.
The U.S. Transportation Department (DOT) is fining Qatar Airways $185,000 for flying in prohibited foreign airspace with the American Airlines code. The DOT did not specify where the Qatar flights were when they violated FAA restrictions on flying in prohibited airspace. The flights occurred in late 2014 and early 2015.
Mexican ULCC Volaris has received approval from Costa Rica’s aviation authority to set up an airline there. Volaris Costa Rica plans to start operations on Dec. 1, Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena said in a Nov. 10 statement. “This news means a lot to us at Volaris, because it represents the opportunity to grow and expand to other markets, being able to connect Central America,” he said.
