China Eastern Airlines board approved plans to launch a business aviation service company that will provide ground handling and maintenance for private and charter flights, among other services. The new venture will be a wholly owned subsidiary and will require an investment of CNY50 million ($7.3 million). The Shanghai-based carrier noted that it has no plans to purchase any business aircraft for the time being but it did not rule out the possibility of reconfiguring some of its existing aircraft.

Spanair's recently announced "feasibility plan," which calls for the grounding of 15 aircraft this fall, a reduction in bases from seven to two and a 24% capacity reduction ( ATWOnline, July 17), will require redundancies equal to up to 954 fulltime positions, the carrier announced last week. The plan is aimed at improving the 2009 financial result by €90 million ($135 million).

Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Bureau has found nothing amiss at Qantas, insiders say, although it is defending itself from charges that it is too close to the national airline. Finnair remained profitable in the second quarter, reporting €13.9 million ($20.9 million) in net earnings that represented a 46.1% fall from the €25.8 million posted in the year-ago period, but warned that second-half EBIT "may be negative" as the industry faces "a market failure caused by an overcapacity in relation to demand."

Air Canada named Claude Morin, currently president and CEO of Air Canada Cargo, VP-global sales effective Sept. 1, replacing the retiring Marc Rosenberg. Senior Director Cargo Services-Americas/South Pacific Lise-Marie Turpin will be promoted on Sept. 1 to GM-Air Canada Cargo, a position that will include responsibility for all aspects of the airline's cargo activities.

The US Air Transport Assn. followed through on its threat and yesterday filed a lawsuit against FAA over its announced Sept. 3 auction of two slots, or one roundtrip, at Newark. HNA subsidiary Grand China Express Airlines, formerly Grand Xinhua Express, plans to sell a stake to Hyundai Heavy Industries so as to improve its financial performance, an industry insider told ATWOnline last week. The Tianjin-based regional has signed a letter of intent for cooperation with Hyundai, which is conducting due diligence on the airline in order to determine the size of its investment. It is widely speculated that the Korean company will purchase a 20% stake with an investment of about CNY120 million ($17.5 million).
