Gelendzhik, the first new civilian airport to be built in Russia in 25 years, commenced commercial operations in June. The airport is a Public-Private Partnership led by Basel Aero, which already operates airports in Krasnodar, Sochi, Gelendzhik and Anapa. The group's airports handled 3.5 million passengers in 2009, or about 9% of Russian airports’ throughput. Russian airlines including Aeroflot, Rossiya, Ural Airlines, UTair, Gazpromavia, Avianova and Atlant-Soyuz already are operating to/from the new airport at the Black Sea resort.

London Gatwick last month opened its new inter-terminal shuttle two months ahead of schedule. The project included installation of a completely new shuttle system, new shuttle cars, refurbishment of the track and transformation of the two terminal stations. Almost 20 years after construction started on the airport near Alanya, a seaside resort in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, Gazipasa finally received its first scheduled flight last month, an ATR 72 operated by BoraJet.

Travelport said that United Airlines signed a two-year extension of their current full content agreement. "Through the extension of the agreement, all United published fares and seat inventory, including Web fares available on its own site, reservation offices and through third parties, will be available to subscribers of Travelport's Apollo, Galileo and Worldspan GDS systems….well into 2013," Travelport said.

Spain's air traffic controllers are threatening a walkout in mid-August to protest pay cuts and changes to their job conditions by AENA, the state-owned airports and air navigation authority, the USCA union said following a vote to strike by its members. It did not announce an exact date for the start or duration of the industrial action, butthe strike is expected to start Aug.18 and last for three days.

7 Singapore Airlines intends to progressively introduce electronic versions of magazines on its KrisWorld inflight entertainment system, beginning with its three in-flight magazines, SilverKris, KrisShop and KrisWorld. The airline said the ultimate aim is a paperless cabin. Navitaire announced that Wizz Air renewed its agreement for distribution, reservation, and departure control services over the next 10 years. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
