China Southern Airlines earned an estimated net profit for the first nine months of 2010 of CNY5.6 billion ($843 million), a more than fifteenfold year-over-year increase from CNY322 million earned in the year-ago period, according to figures derived from both a CZ filing with the Shanghai Stock Market and estimates made by China International Capital Corp.

Hawaiian Holdings, parent of Hawaiian Airlines, reported its tenth consecutive quarterly profit, posting earnings of $30.5 million for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, down 0.7% compared to earnings of $30.7 million in the year-ago period. The company noted that 2010 third-quarter results were boosted by a lower tax rate and related accrued interest that raised income by $7.1 million. In the year-ago period, the company had an income tax benefit of $13.7 million.

AerCap Holdings announced that Gothenburg-based cargo operator West Atlantic will become the launch operator for the Airbus A320 passenger-to-freighter program by taking an initial three aircraft on lease from AerCap with deliveries between 2012 and mid-2013, with the option of a further four aircraft by 2015. The agreement is subject to finalization of terms and conditions, AerCap said. The aircraft are part of a 2008 passenger-to-freighter conversion project between Airbus Freighter Conversions and AerCap covering up to 30 A320s.

Nav Canada's 700 technicians represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers voted to ratify a tentative collective bargaining agreement reached last month with the air navigation services provider. The new contract runs until Aug. 31, 2011, and provides for wage increases of 1% retroactive to Sept. 1, 2009, 1% retroactive to March 1 and 1% retroactive to Sept. 1. There will be an additional 1.5% increase on March 1, 2011.

Iran Air said it "may be necessary" to operate its London Heathrow–Tehran flights "with an unscheduled refueling stop at Hamburg or Vienna" owing to "ongoing fuel supply problems at London Heathrow." The statement comes as multiple media outlets report that a number of Western fuel providers are unwilling to conduct business with the carrier following sanctions imposed on the Iranian government earlier this year by the UN, US and EU.

Russia's S7 Airlines plans to buy a mix of up to eight 737-800s and A320 family aircraft in 2011 as part of its fleet modernization program, according to CEO Vladimir Obyedkov. "If the shareholders permit it, we will buy seven or eight aircraft," he told RIA Novosti. He said the 737-800s would operate for S7 subsidiary Globus Airlines while the A320s would join S7's mainline fleet. The carrier currently operates 28 A320 family aircraft, five A310-200/300s and two 767-300s. It also owns several Russian-built aircraft including Tu154s and IL-86s.
