Brazilian low cost carrier GOL is closing down its Webjet subsidiary, returning all 20 of the carrier’s Boeing 737-300s and laying off 850 employees. Announcing the closure Friday, GOL said, “Webjet has an operational model based on a fleet that mostly consists of aging Boeing 737-300 aircraft that are advanced age, technologically out of date and consume large amounts of fuel. Given the Brazilian sector’s new cost standards, this model is no longer competitive.
Ryanair (FR) will cut its flight schedule at Budapest Airport (BUD) by 40% following its latest spat with the airport’s operator over the cost of services. The Irish low-cost carrier will cut 10 routes and reduce the number of flights to and from the Hungarian capital from 280 to 170 a week because of what it says are increased charges and inefficiencies at the airport.
The Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) has been granted its type certificate in Indonesia. The validation confirms the aircraft with Indonesian Aviation Authority requirements, allowing its export to Indonesia and operation by local airlines. The first SSJ100 will be delivered to Indonesian Sky Aviation before the end of this year. The carrier ordered 12 SSJ100s in August 2011 at MAKS Air Show in Moscow. Deliveries are planned for 2012-2015.
France and Germany are reported to have reached a deal on restructuring their respective state shareholdings in European aerospace and defence conglomerate EADS, according to the German newspaper Handelsblatt. It reported that both France and Germany have each agreed to hold about 12% of the company, which owns Airbus, with Spain retaining its current 5.5% stake.
TIMCO Aviation Services purchased the assets of PEMCO World Air Services aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operation at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport. It has leased the hangar previously occupied by PEMCO to serve regional aircraft operators at the facility.
