Tec4Jets has won approval from Belgium’s regulatory authorities to perform line maintenance services and AOG support on all variants of the Airbus A320 family at its Brussels Airport base. Results from the world’s first civil flight powered by 100% biofuel released by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) show that the biofuel used in the flight last October is cleaner than and as efficient as conventional aviation fuel. Data collected in-flight shows a 50% reduction in aerosol emissions when using biofuel compared to conventional fuel, NRC said. Additional tests performed on a static engine show a reduction in particles of up to 25% and in black carbon emissions of up to 49 % compared to conventional fuel.
Biofuel company Algae.Tec, which in September signed a collaborative agreement with Lufthansa, has gained approval from the Australian government for an A$12.15 million cash refund on Australian and overseas development expenditure for the financial years 30 June 2012 to 30 June 2015. The deal allows for an initial A$27 million spend on Algae.Tec technology developments, of which the Australian government will reimburse 45% or $12.15 million. The money will support funding of at least three algae bioreactor facilities in Australia, Asia and the US.
Neste Oil has joined the European Union-funded Initiative Towards Sustainable Kerosene for Aviation (ITAKA) project, which supports the commercialization and use of renewable aviation fuel in Europe. Neste Oil's role in the consortium will be to produce the renewable fuel used in the project. The 36-month ITAKA project has been granted €10 million of funding under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development.
