A Turnaround Plan

Throughout 2023, Wheels Up faced financial hardship that threatened its operations — losing as much as $555 million in 2022 and an additional $261.5 million in the first half of 2023. The company was saved by a $500 million rescue package made in large part by Delta Air Lines. Wheels Up has a comprehensive turnaround plan with expectations to become profitable by the end of 2024, company officials have said.

According to Carter Withers, Wheels Up vice president of brand activation & member engagement, Atlanta was selected in part due to its pool of aviation talent and proximity to Delta.

Withers describes the Atlanta facility as dynamic, stating that the current office space still holds the potential to grow alongside business demands.

"We wanted to be able to solve for now, but also grow into the space as we evolved," she says.

Wheels Up's MOC opened on May 15, 2023, and serves as a collaborative workspace for its employees that work around the clock. According to Withers, Wheels Up is working on reducing its operating certificates from six to one.

"I can hear and see and know everything that's going on," Caxide says. "So, whether it's our maintenance leaders, whether it's our ops supervisors or crew escalation pilot, I'm able to be involved in every aspect of the daily operation."

Collaborative workspaces can be found adjacent to private rooms and offices inside the Atlanta facility. The MOC also provides private areas for employees to receive private phone calls or for momentary solitude.

Wheels Up's MOC also includes multiple training rooms that can host meetings and town halls. The training rooms can seat up to 64 people or be split into two 32-seat configurations, officials say.

The breakroom and kitchen for associates, adjacent to the Floor, contains food and beverages that are restocked daily for purchase. The inclusion was made to ensure that employees would not have to leave the facility during late-hour shifts.

Wheels Up's Member Operations Center (MOC), located in Atlanta, Georgia, opened its doors on May 15, 2023, and has grown in the image of Delta Air Line's operations following its large-stake investment in the private jet charter.

The facility, located near Atlanta's Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), provides collaborative workspaces for over 150 employees to track, schedule and manage charter flights across the country. According to Carter Withers, Wheels Up vice president of brand activation & brand management, "the floor" takes heavy inspiration from Delta flight operations, where teams are organized across the room according to their place in the mission management process.

"So, inside 48 hours, anything operationally is sitting at the fleet pod working on those trips. Sitting around, being able to stand up and talk to each other," says Lars Kenyon, Wheels Up deputy director MOC. "For the first time for Wheels Up — we're solving problems in real time."
