Falcon Flies With New Nacelle: The first photo of the Falcon prototype fitted with a new engine nacelle shows enlarged engine inlet (for both gas generator and fan air), and increased fineness ratio. The redesign has reduced drag rise at high-speed cruise.

Derringer Prototype Crashes; Cause Unknown, from January 1965 issue of Business & Commercial Aviation

Derringer Prototype Crashes; Cause Unknown: Wing Derringer prototype, two-place business twin, crashed into the Pacific off California coast on Dec. 12. Pilot Tom Heffner was killed and only small fragments of the airplane were recovered. The builder, Hi-Shear Corp., Torrance, California is undecided whether to continue the project.

Piper medium twin, now in prototype flight-test phase, will enter production in 18-24 months. New Model PA 31 seats six to eight passengers and has a design top speed of 260 mph at 16,000 ft. The Lycoming 310-hp turbocharged TIO-540-A1A’s deliver full power to 16,000 ft. and 75% to 25,000 ft. Piper reports that the name will be “Indian,” and it will be priced “well under $100,000.”

DC-3 replacement, or equivalent-size business aircraft, Nord Aviation feels it has the answer in the new “262” model made in France and powered by Turbomeca. Max gross weight 22,700 lb.; 7,800 lb. useful. Lake Central Airlines has the airplane on order.

The world’s most popular private airplane is the 172 from Cessna, whose sales (including Skyhawk version) are edging close to the 1,500 mark. Now the USAF has joined the parade, choosing the 172F (military version, T-41A) for the Air Training Command’s light plane training program. The civilian 172 costs $10,350 and is powered by a 145-hp Continental.
