FAA’s Huerta: ‘Equip 2020’ Deadline Won’t Be Extended

Don’t expect the deadline to comply with the FAA’s NextGen mandate to move beyond 2020, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said during a meeting with reporters at AirVenture Oshkosh.

It won’t. 

“Don’t wait until the last minute,” Huerta said. “The mandate is not going away.” 

The FAA has mandated that almost all aircraft flying in U.S. airspace above 10,000 ft. must be equipped with ADS-B Out avionics equipment by Jan. 1, 2020. 

All of the airlines have plans to comply with the mandate. Equipment prices for aircraft owners have come down to a realm in which they are affordable, Huerta said.

FAA: Pilot Reports Of UAV Sightings Up Dramatically

Pilots have reported seeing unmanned aircraft more than 650 times so far this year, the FAA says, a dramatic increase over the 238 sightings reported in all of 2014.

Pilots have reported seeing UAVs at altitudes up to 10,000 ft., well above the levels normally associated with “drone” activity.

NTSB: Faulty Carburetor Likely Cause of Harrison Ford’s Accident

A federal report cites a faulty carburetor that led to the loss of engine power as the probable cause of the crash of Harrison Ford’s vintage aircraft, which sent the movie actor to the hospital with serious injuries.

In addition, an improperly installed shoulder harness in the aircraft contributed to the severity of Ford’s injuries, according to the report released this month by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Citation M2 OK’d For High-Elevation Airports

Cessna Aircraft’s Citation M2 business jet has received certification to operate at high-elevation airports.

The M2 has been certified to operate at airports with an elevation of up to 14,000 ft., the company said.
