Chile’s aging fighter fleet is set to receive a significant boost. Following a November 2023 contract signing, Lockheed Martin will upgrade 35 F-16AM and BM MLU aircraft to the M6.6 standard. This long-awaited process faced several delays but is now scheduled for completion by 2032. The F-16s will continue operating alongside the F-5 light combat aircraft, which are expected to be retired by 2035. To avoid a fighter capability gap, Chile will need to begin searching for a replacement platform within the next five years.

No official tender has currently been issued, and no platform has been identified as a potential replacement. But a mix of older F-16s and legacy F-5s is not suitable for the future era of conflict. Financial constraints and political decisions may further complicate the process. Chile recently announced plans to reduce its reliance on Israeli ammunition and weaponry—a costly endeavor that requires modifications to dependent systems, as well as a redesign of supply chains and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) networks.

Chile’s rotary wing fleet is also receiving a much-needed investment. With the retirement of its UH-1Hs underway, the search for a replacement has begun, and deliveries are expected to start around 2027. The Airbus H125 and Bell 407GXi are currently under consideration. The rest of the fleet includes five S-70i and 15 Bell 412 helicopters, all procured within the last decade.

Meanwhile, the Chilean Air Force (FACH) transport fleet is under pressure. Both the DHC-6-100 and -300 fleets will reach the end of their operational service lives by 2035, leaving two aging C-130H aircraft to handle the bulk of transport duties. FACH plans to procure at least 10 transport aircraft to replenish its fleet. Although the official requirement calls for a light transport aircraft, the medium-weight class C-390 is emerging as a strong contender.
