Porter To Begin Pittsburgh Service

Porter Airlines will begin flying to Pittsburgh International Airport on Sept. 21, the airport announced June 25. Porter will serve Pittsburgh, its 22nd destination, up to twice daily from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. When service starts, Pittsburgh will have service to six international destinations.

Air Canada To Fly To London Gatwick Next Spring

Flights will be operated by Air Canada Rouge, the low-cost subsidiary Air Canada created to compete with WestJet, Air Transat and other Canadian charter carriers. Air Canada Rouge will fly Boeing 767s with 24 seats in a premium-economy section and 256 seats in economy. The summer-only service begins on May 19, 2016.

United Airlines To Acquire 5% Stake In Brazil’s Azul

United Airlines will spend $100 million to acquire a 5% stake in Azul Brazilian Airlines, and the two carriers have entered into a strategic partnership that will include codesharing and reciprocal loyalty-program benefits.

ANA Plans New Australian Service

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is looking to reenter the Australian market with a Tokyo Haneda-Sydney flight. The airline wants to start the service in the upcoming northern winter season, and if it cannot do it by then, in the summer 2016 schedule. It would probably use a Boeing 767 or 787 for such a flight. ANA last flew this route in 1999. Qantas and Japan Airlines operate flights from Tokyo Narita to Sydney, but Qantas will switch the route to Haneda in August.

EASA To End Volcanic Ash Operations Plan Database Updates

“A majority of European States have declared that, in case of volcanic eruption affecting European airspace, they would avoid unnecessary closure of airspace and recognize that operators will make their own decisions to operate or not into areas of forecast ash contamination, based on their VA SRA,” or Volcanic Ash Safety Risk Assessment plans, the agency explains in a new safety bulletin.
