FAA Tasks Group To Study Pilot Mental Fitness

FAA has tasked a rulemaking advisory committee with studying pilot fitness, including emotional and mental heath, and issuing recommendations on any rule changes or guidance within six months. The effort, recommended by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team, is a direct response to the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525, among others, FAA says. The Germanwings co-pilot apparently flew the aircraft into the ground intentionally after locking the pilot out of the cockpit.”U.S.

The FAA is staging ground collisions between representative aircraft wings and landing gear with approach lights and landing aids to develop standardized test procedures for evaluating the “frangibility” of landing aids and light towers near runways.
