He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
While European carriers--supported by European Union officials--are eager to proceed as quickly as possible with proposals to create a common transatlantic aviation area, U.S. airlines and the Transportation Dept. are less enthusiastic.
Delta Air Lines is interested in starting talks with Alitalia that could result in the Italian flag carrier joining the Delta/Air France alliance. Paul Matsen, Delta's senior vice president for alliance strategy and development, said at a recent conference in Phoenix that Alitalia could fit the alliance's European plans well. He said Delta would be willing to talk to the carrier, if Alitalia was prepared to do so.
As part of Northrop Grumman's strategy aimed at recentering itself around cutting-edge defense technologies, the company is evaluating transatlantic partnerships with DaimlerChrysler Aerospace and planning divestiture of its civil aerostructures business.
