He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Average yields for Europe's regional airlines are expected to continue to rebound based on a rising demand in air travel in the first half of the year. The downside to this rosy scenario is that rising fuel prices are expected to curtail expansion plans.
Italian low-fare airline Volareweb canceled its services from Milan, Rome and Venice to Berlin this week and plans to scrap its Frankfurt/Hahn services, too, underscoring how increased operating costs are beginning to seriously hurt Europe's largely infant low-fare airline sector. The "delicate financial state" of the company prompted the airline to take the step, a spokesperson told German daily Die Welt. Volareweb had planned to withdraw from the money-losing routes by the end of October, she added.
U.S. airline investor George Soros pulled out of the bidding for the privatization of Malev Hungarian Airlines, as the Oct. 20 bidding deadline passed. A spokesman for Hainan Airlines -- in which Soros holds a 14.9% stake -- said Hainan decided against bidding after a comprehensive analysis of Malev's restructuring plans. Soros was understood to have considered investing in Malev through Hainan.
