He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
France plans to introduce an airline ticket tax aimed at alleviating poverty in Third World countries "as soon as possible," President Jacques Chirac said yesterday. "Without waiting, I asked the government to start the procedures necessary to put such a tax in place next year," Chirac said. According to the French president, France, Germany, Chile, Brazil, Algeria and Spain will urge the introduction of an international tax on airline tickets at a United Nations summit in New York next month.
Gate Gourmet UK and the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) have reached a preliminary agreement regarding pay, work rules and the future of laid-off workers that could pave the way for an improved contract between the caterer and its main London Heathrow-based customer, British Airways. The union said both sides have reached a framework, but details need to be further discussed next week. Neither side provided details of the deal, which is crucial for Gate Gourmet UK's survival.
For the sixth time since the early 1990s, Hungary failed to sell its shareholding in national carrier Malev Hungarian Airlines. Privatization agency APV last week said it would sell Budapest Airport first in hopes of improving the chances of getting a higher price for Malev in the future.
