LOT Polish Airlines could become Europe's largest Embraer operator in the medium term, if the airline opts for the Embraer 195 as its future narrowbody workhorse in the European network. The airline's fleet evaluation study pitches the 195 against the Boeing 737-500 it currently uses, said Marek Serafin, LOT's director-network management. LOT currently operates 10 Embraer 170s and 11 ERJ-145s, with the 50-seater fleet likely to be reduced in the next few years. The airline will take delivery of four Embraer 175s next year to complement the 170 fleet.
Spanish carrier Iberia suffered a 28% decline in operating profit in the third quarter, mainly due to the increased price of fuel, the airline said this week. Iberia's operating profit was EUR80 million (US$94 million) for the period. Net profit more than quadrupled, however, as the airline took advantage of a EUR600 million (US$701 million) extraordinary gain as a result of the sale of an 18% stake in travel distribution specialist Amadeus.
Finnair managed to triple its third-quarter profit to EUR26.4 million (US$31 million) as traffic and yields continued to grow. Sales were up 13.4% and stood at EUR471 million (US$550 million) for the period. CEO Keijo Suila, who will retire by the end of the year, said the airline will post a significant full-year profit.
