He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
The euro zone may be in turmoil, fuel prices may be skyrocketing and their financial results hurting, but Middle Eastern airlines are continuing to add capacity. By 2030, traffic in the region will have tripled, mirroring that of Europe, Asia or North America today, according to Airbus forecasts. Emirates has made a fundamental strategy decision to continue growing despite a rather dramatic earnings slump in the first half of 2011. “We have been held back too many times and we have always regretted that we slowed down,” says Emirates President Tim Clark.
As Embraer defines its plan for the second-generation E-Jet regional aircraft, it plans to ensure pilots will need to have only one type rating to operate either aircraft model. Over the course of the next year, Embraer will have discussions with airlines to assess their requirements for a new product and to define the performance parameters by late next year for the new family of aircraft, says Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, Embraer president of Commercial Aviation.
